Arsenal vs Man City - LIVE!

A stoppage-time goal from midfielder Rodri gave Premier League leaders Man City a 2-1 win at Arsenal on New Year’s Day.

Arsenal’s early pressure looked to have paid dividends when playmaker Martin Odegaard was upended in the box by goalkeeper Ederson, but neither the referee nor VAR deemed the challenge worth of a penalty.

The Gunners eventually took a deserved lead in the 31st minute when Bukayo Saka finished a sweeping move by rifling home Kieran Tierney’s pass, and they closed out the first half without allowing City a single shot on target.

The visitors levelled from the spot though through Riyad Mahrez early in the second half when Granit Xhaka was adjudged to have fouled Bernardo Silva in the box after a VAR review.

Gabriel Martinelli missed a glorious chance to put Arsenal back in the lead moments later before Gabriel was sent off for his second yellow card.

Arsenal held their shape but they failed to deal with a high ball into the box in stoppage time and it fell to Rodri, who drilled it home to grab all three points with only their second effort on target in the game.

Saka and Partey both shine for Arsenal...

15:30 , Matt Verri

Arsenal ratings: Saka terrorises defence as Partey shows best form

Ramsdale not impressed...

15:08 , Matt Verri

“Both penalties, I don’t know why the ref is told to see one & not the other. It is there for a reason, go & use it. It is the inconsistency.

“The whole point is to help the game out, in real time it didn’t look like one and slow it down on a screen & it’s given.”

Guardiola on VAR...

15:06 , Matt Verri

“I didn’t see the penalty [Odegaard incident] because they didn’t show it on the screen. They showed it on the screen for Bernardo, so Arsenal did it well.

“I could not see the potential penalty, so I cannot say.”

Pep Guardiola’s post-match thoughts...

15:03 , Matt Verri

“They were better. We faced a team that in the last years have struggled to be in the top four, and they started the season in the bottom, bottom, bottom.

“They are in the top four, they have six games after the last game. We had two days and a half, and Brentford was so tough.

“We didn’t have energy. It was difficult, we didn’t have energy. We tried, and in the second-half one minute changed it - the penalty, and almost the own-goal, and the sending-off. In football we try to analyse many things, but the coin sometimes falls down on your side, sometimes the other side. That is the reality.”

Rodri on key decisions...

14:55 , Matt Verri

On Silva penalty: “I have no doubt it was a penalty. First of all I didn’t know if there was contact, but I got close enough to the screen and for me it’s a clear penalty.”

On Odegaard incident: “Honestly I don’t know, I didn’t watch that on the screen.”

Rodri’s post-match thoughts...

14:53 , Matt Verri

“They’re an unbelievable team, they showed why they’re in this position. The work they’ve done with Mikel is massive. We know also they’ve rested more than us, they had six days to prepare, we had three games in one week. It’s tough.

“We struggled in the first half, but controlled it a little bit more in the second half. Sometimes it’s like this - the other team also plays. They did a great game, but fortunately we showed our champions’ personality to go again.”

What it means...

14:48 , Matt Verri

City are now 11 points clear at the top of the table, before Chelsea face Liverpool tomorrow. Safe to say they’re very much in pole position for another title.

For Arsenal, they’re in fourth and four points clear of West Ham. But David Moyes’ side can close that gap when they face Crystal Palace later today.

Heartbreak for Arsenal...

14:40 , Matt Verri

14:28 , Matt Verri

Arsenal 1-2 Man City

An absolutely breathless 90 minutes, and it ends with City making it 11 Premier League wins in a row. They really had to work for this one.

Saka put Arsenal in front in the first-half, but City scored twice after the break... either side of Gabriel’s red-card.

The Gunners can take plenty from their performance, but it’s a painful defeat after they display they produced.

14:25 , Matt Verri

90+5 mins: Can Arsenal do anything in the final minute of stoppage time? Silva booked for kicking the ball away.

Doesn’t look like the Gunners will have time to do anything about Rodri’s late strike.

GOAL! Arsenal 1-2 Man City | Rodri 90+3

14:23 , Matt Verri

Arsenal’s efforts are in vain, as Man City steal it right at the death. De Bruyne lifts one over the top, Holding’s header can only flick it on.

Shot is blocked but it falls into the path of Rodri, and he poked past Ramsdale!

14:22 , Matt Verri

90+2 mins: Tierney thinks he can pounce on a loose ball, but Cancelo gets there first and the left-back brings him down. City free-kick.

De Bruyne pulls it back to the edge of the box... Cancelo’s shot is blocked by Partey.

14:20 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Smith Rowe puts pressure on Ake and he wins a corner for the Gunners. This is a rare chance for them to get men forward.

Poor ball from Smith Rowe though and it’s easily cleared. Six minutes of added time...

14:18 , Matt Verri

88 mins: Ramsdale drops the ball under pressure from Dias, but the offside flag is up so no damage done for Arsenal.

The goalkeeper goes down too... looks like he’s hurt his eye and might need some treatment.

14:16 , Matt Verri

86 mins: Crucial flick from White in the middle, Gundogan was waiting behind him. Cancelo got on the outside well to put the ball in.

Sterling on the other wing then attacks, but his cross deflects into Ramsdale’s arms.

14:13 , Matt Verri

83 mins: Smith Rowe gets on the ball and combines with Saka, Arsenal just enjoying a bit of possession for now.

Backpass to Ramsdale isn’t the best, and he has to rush out and smash it straight out of play. Saka off for Arsenal, as they make their last sub. Elneny on in his place.

14:11 , Matt Verri

81 mins: It’s all hands on deck now for Arsenal. Tomiyasu is alert and he slides in to clear the danger. White then backs it up with a good header.

The visitors are swarming again though, almost impossible for the Gunners to get out.

14:10 , Matt Verri

80 mins: Cancelo the latest City player to send a shot from range over the bar.

10 minutes, plus a fair bit of added time, to come for the Gunners. It’s going to feel a lot more than that for Arsenal.

14:07 , Matt Verri

78 mins: Really good from Partey who drives forward and gets Arsenal up the pitch.

Puts the ball into the box... only Martinelli has gone with him. Laporte lays it off to Ederson, and Martinelli very nearly sneaks in but the goalkeeper hammers it clear.

14:06 , Matt Verri

76 mins: Saka played in with a ball over the top, but he’s definitely offside.

Runs forward, cuts inside, shot blocked... and then the flag eventually goes up.

14:04 , Matt Verri

74 mins: Bernardo Silva into the box... a very unpopular figures at the Emirates.

First shot is blocked by Tierney, second is easily saved by Ramsdale.

14:02 , Matt Verri

72 mins: Looks like Smith Rowe out to the left, with Martinelli moving into a central position.

Smith Rowe has had plenty of success scoring goals off the bench recently, but that’s probably not his main priority this afternoon. Arsenal just looking to stay solid.

Ball nearly drops for Gundogan in the box, but the Gunners clear... and Mahrez then runs it out.

14:00 , Matt Verri

70 mins: Arsenal sitting deeper and deeper now, knowing City have the man advantage. Cancelo gets to the byline down the right but there is too much on his cross.

Laporte fires an effort miles over the bar from 30 yards. Arsenal will want to see plenty more of that.

Smith Rowe is now on for the hosts, replacing Lacazette.

13:58 , Matt Verri

68 mins: Long throw from Tierney... Holding can’t win it though, and Rodri clears.

De Bruyne leads the counter for City, but is stopped by Holding. Free-kick given, and a yellow card. You can imagine what the home fans think of that.

13:56 , Matt Verri

66 mins: Smith Rowe about to come on now.

The Gunners still trying to press, but much easier now for City to play out around them. Long 25 minutes ahead.

13:53 , Matt Verri

63 mins: Furious atmosphere at the Emirates, crowd screaming at the referee for every decision.

Rodri gives away the free-kick, but it’s Saka who is booked for demanding a yellow card.

13:52 , Matt Verri

62 mins: Holding on, Odegaard off. Arsenal going to desperately try and hold what they have.

Jesus also coming off, replaced by Gundogan. Jesus getting loudly booed on his way off.

13:51 , Matt Verri

61 mins: Astonishing how quickly this has turned around.

Seconds after very nearly taking the lead again, Arsenal are down to ten men. This has happened a lot to them against City in the past, and once again it could prove costly.

Rob Holding ready to come on.

Simon Collings at the Emirates

13:49 , Matt Verri

Arsenal are upset about the awarding of the penalty, as are the home fans. I think it is a penalty, but if that one is then the Odegaard shout seems like a good one too.

13:49 , Matt Verri

59 mins: WHAT A MISS!

How are Arsenal not in front?! Ball rolling towards the goal... Ake slides in and hooks it off the line.

Straight back out to Martinelli and he somehow misses the open goal. Huge moment.

And this is an even bigger one... GABRIEL SENT OFF! First yellow for digging up the penalty spot, and now a second minutes later for a foul on Jesus. It’s all falling apart for the Gunners.

GOAL! Arsenal 1-1 Man City | Riyad Mahrez 57'

13:46 , Matt Verri

He had to wait a long time before taking it, but Mahrez makes no mistake as he sends Ramsdale the wrong way. 13th goal of the season for the Algerian.

13:45 , Matt Verri

Both sets of players letting frustrations boil over... Arsenal team are furious with that decision. Referee almost gets bundled over in the aftermath.

Xhaka into the book for the foul.

13:44 , Matt Verri

54 mins: VAR tells the referee to go and have a look at the monitor. This normally always ends in a decision being reversed.

And it has been overturned. Penalty City! Xhaka has given away the spot-kick.

13:43 , Matt Verri

53 mins: City want a penalty this time... not given!

Silva goes down under a challenge from Xhaka, but he doesn’t get what he wants. Definite pull of the shirt from Xhaka, it’s not very subtle either.

VAR checking it.

13:41 , Matt Verri

51 mins: Falls to Martinelli on the edge of the box, but he doesn’t make any real contact with the volley.

Saka whips a great ball back into the box, but it’s just over the head of Gabriel who was free in the box.

13:39 , Matt Verri

49 mins: First attack of the half for the Gunners, as Xhaka fires it out wide to Saka. Just the four City players charge over to close him down...

Huge challenge from Rodri on Martinelli! Did not hold back there. Right on the edge of the box, and Rodri has come flying in. Got the ball, but plenty of the Brazilian too. No free-kick given though. Corner.

13:37 , Matt Verri

47 mins: Laporte brings the ball forward, and Partey slides in to try and stop him. He certainly does that, but he gives away the free-kick in doing so.

13:35 , Matt Verri

Second-half underway!

Can Arsenal maintain the level of performance they showed in the opening 45 minutes?

13:33 , Matt Verri

Not many would have seen this coming pre-match... City did not manage a single shot on target in the first-half.

67% of possession for Guardiola’s side, but nothing to show for it. You’d imagine they will come out fired up after the break.

Gunners unlucky not to have been given a penalty?

13:30 , Matt Verri

Martin Odegaard seemed to have been brought down by Ederson, but VAR did not overturn the decision.

Our poll shows that many of you think that was the wrong decision.

How Arsenal took the lead...

13:27 , Matt Verri

Simon Collings at the Emirates

13:25 , Matt Verri

That was one of Arsenal’s best 45 minutes under Arteta. It’s a shame he wasn’t here to witness it, we can only imagine how he’s coping at home.

13:20 , Matt Verri

Arsenal 1-0 Man City

Well that couldn’t have gone much better for the Gunners, who have been absolutely brilliant. Solid in their shape when they’ve sat off, superb pressing from the front-line, and so dangerous in attack - particularly down the wings.

Saka with the goal and he’s had a great 45 minutes, as have so many in red shirts.

City have had some bright moments going forward, but they’ve been second best. Surely they’ll improve after the break.

13:17 , Matt Verri

45 mins: More good pressing from Arsenal, and Martinelli deflects a City pass out for a throw-in. Crowd celebrate it almost like a goal.

The Brazilian has made such a different in recent matches, since he’s come into the team. Two minutes added on.

13:15 , Matt Verri

42 mins: Tomiyasu back in the side and he doesn’t look like he’s lost any of his sharpness.

Beats Sterling in a foot race and is really strong to take the ball, and Arsenal can clear. Important for the Gunners that they see this through to half-time now.

It’s very nearly even better than that... Martinelli inches away from making it 2-0! He runs and runs and runs... somehow beats Cancelo and then pokes it towards the far post. Beats Ederson, but just wide.

13:12 , Matt Verri

40 mins: City struggling to cope when Saka runs at them down the right.

Ake and Rodri double up on them, but he cuts inside between two of them and keeps going. Rodri brings him down, free-kick. Saka stays down briefly, but he’s up on his feet again.

13:11 , Matt Verri

38 mins: Very nearly for City. Jesus turns so well and he can run from inside his own half. White tries to clip his heels and bring him down.

De Bruyne is making the run and is free, but the ball comes too late and he would have been offside.

Arsenal back on the attack, Martinelli curls an effort.... so close. Just wide of the far post.

13:09 , Matt Verri

37 mins: Mahrez has space to work it onto his left foot and put a ball into the box... Partey strong in the middle to ensure Jesus can’t get a run at it.

City think he was a bit too strong and grabbed hold of Jesus. Partey has been brilliant for the Gunners so far.

13:06 , Matt Verri

34 mins: The Gunners come forward again with Xhaka. Out wide to Martinelli, who tries to cut inside but loses it.

Tierney then whips a ball in, but Ederson can come out and claim.

Simon Collings at the Emirates

13:04 , Matt Verri

Not sure I’ve seen a goal celebrated like that at the Emirates for a while. Saka in with the fans, who are going mad.

GOAL! Arsenal 1-0 Man City | Bukayo Saka 31'

13:04 , Matt Verri

And they deserve it, after a really impressive opening half an hour at the Emirates. Bukayo Saka gives the Gunners the lead.

Worked out to the left wing, and Tierney is allowed to jog forward. Rolls it into the path of Saka in the box, and he sweeps it into the net. 1-0 Arsenal!

13:02 , Matt Verri

29 mins: Doesn’t take long for City to click into gear though.

De Bruyne finds Sterling and he has space to run into. Xhaka’s sliding tackle doesn’t make contact, and the City man knocks it past White and goes down. Doesn’t get the free-kick.

12:59 , Matt Verri

27 mins: It really has been all Arsenal for the last five minutes, City struggling to get out.

Martinelli again drives forward and it falls to Lacazette on the edge of the box. He turns and gets the shot away, but Dias blocks it.

Simon Collings at the Emirates

12:57 , Matt Verri

Thomas Partey looks like a different player to four weeks ago. Back then his confidence was rock bottom, but now there’s a swagger about his play.

12:56 , Matt Verri

24 mins: Arteta will be delighted with what he’s seen so far, particularly in terms of the pressing. The Gunners not giving City time to relax on the ball.

Wonderful cross from Tierney... even better defending from Dias to hook it away. Another ball from Tierney, but too much on this one.

12:53 , Matt Verri

21 mins: More good work out wide from the Gunners.

White chips one over the top to Tomiyasu, who volleys it into the box first time. Another corner. Saka takes and it’s a great ball in, but Dias does well to get it away.

Arteta getting his thoughts across?

12:52 , Matt Verri

12:51 , Matt Verri

19 mins: De Bruyne whips one towards the far corner... just wide. Lovely effort though.

Gabriel was strong initially against Jesus to win it back, but he couldn’t clear. Nearly proved very costly.

12:49 , Matt Verri

17 mins: Arsenal look really dangerous when they break with pace.

Great work from Partey in midfield and he plays Martinelli in. Drives inside and pokes it at goal, Ederson gets down to save it. Corner comes to nothing for the Gunners.

Promising signs down both wings.

Simon Collings at the Emirates

12:47 , Matt Verri

The on-field decision was key for that penalty shout. If the referee had pointed to the spot, I don’t think VAR overturns it.

12:46 , Matt Verri

14 mins: City so close to taking the lead. The visitors keep possession from the corner, and it’s a stunning cross from deep into the by Sterling.

Dias has to score, but he flicks it just wide. Big, big chance.

12:45 , Matt Verri

13 mins: Arsenal can feel slightly aggrieved with that decision. One of those where had the referee given the penalty, it surely wouldn’t have been overturned.

Tomiyasu with a good challenge on De Bruyne, but it’s a City corner. Gabriel with the header away.

12:43 , Matt Verri

11 mins: Penalty Arsenal?! No... corner.

Wow. Martinelli does really well down the left and he cuts inside. Plays it to Lacazette, who slides it on to Odegaard. Touch takes him into the box and he just gets there before Ederson, who comes lunging in.

Who got the ball first? That is the key. VAR check complete. No penalty. That was a really tight decision.

Simon Collings at the Emirates

12:41 , Matt Verri

City, as expected, are enjoying plenty of the ball. But when Arsenal do get out they’re looking to Saka as the out-ball. He has got Ake for pace when one on one.

12:41 , Matt Verri

8 mins: Good shape from the Gunners. City have possession in defence, but not finding it particularly easy to pass through the lines. Guardiola very frustrated.

Odegaard plays it in to Saka who has space to run at Ake. Goes down the outside and puts it into the box, but Rodri mops it up.

12:39 , Matt Verri

6 mins: Ederson’s positioning is so good. Ball floated over the top, but the goalkeeper is there as Lacazette tries to get on the end of it it.

The Frenchman then puts pressure on Ederson, who just about clears it in time.

12:37 , Matt Verri

4 mins: First warning for Arsenal, and it’s one they need to learn from.

De Bruyne given time in midfield and he slides a great pass through to Sterling. Gabriel gets across well to clear it for a corner. To the near post... Silva flick deflected behind for another one.

Laporte and Jesus get in each other’s way from the second corner, but the Brazilian’s header still very nearly finds the back of the net. Dangerous moments for Arsenal.

12:34 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Arsenal looking to press high right from the off... Ederson responds by floating a lovely ball out to Cancelo.

City dominating possession as you’d expect, but the Gunners will want to be dangerous on the break.

12:32 , Matt Verri

We are underway at the Emirates!

Arsenal to produce a big shock at the start of 2022, or City to go marching on and move 11 points clear at the top of the table?

All will be revealed...

12:29 , Matt Verri

It was 5-0 the last time these two met, at the start of the season. Xhaka got sent off early on.

But Arsenal look very different now - Ramsdale, Tomiyasu, White, Gabriel, Partey, Martinelli... none of those played that day.

Players are out on the pitch now. Just a couple of minutes to go.

12:27 , Matt Verri

It’s nearly time at the Emirates...

Or not quite. A couple of minutes delay, with one of the linesmen being replaced late on.

Once that’s sorted we’ll be ready for kick-off!

New face on media duties...

12:21 , Matt Verri

Guardiola on selecting Cancelo...

12:19 , Matt Verri

Joao Cancelo starts for City this afternoon, despite assaulted in a robbery just a couple of days ago. Guardiola had this to say...

“We spoke with him, the club. it was a real tough moment for him and his family, all the family was there,” the City boss said.

“Unexplained what happened, really scary. Unfortunately it happened, he feels good, his family feels good, we spoke and he’s ready to play.”

Warm-ups well underway...

12:15 , Matt Verri

Albert Stuivenberg leading the Arsenal warm-up, and he’ll be very glad to have Tomiyasu out there.

Those stepping up in Arteta’s absence...

12:02 , Matt Verri

Eddie Nketiah out with Covid

11:53 , Matt Verri

Eddie Nketiah is the latest player to test positive for Covid-19, so he misses out this afternoon. Albert Sambi Lokonga is back on the bench though,

Reminder that Mikel Arteta also has to watch from home, after his positive test. He won’t be watching BT Sport though... you can read more about that here.

11:49 , Matt Verri

So just the one change for the Gunners, and an important one at that. Tomiyasu back into the team, meaning White moves to centre-back and Holding drops to the bench.

For City, Rodri replaces Fernandinho in midfield, with Sterling and Mahrez coming in for Grealish and Foden.

Simon Collings at the Emirates

11:32 , Matt Verri

Starting XI: Ederson, Joao Cancelo, Dias, Laporte, Ake, De Bruyne, Rodri, Bernardo Silva, Mahrez, Gabriel Jesus, Sterling

Subs: Steffen, Walker, Gundogan, Grealish, Fernandinho, Kayky, Mbete-Tabu, Palmer, McAtee

11:31 , Matt Verri

Starting XI: Ramsdale, Tomiyasu, White, Gabriel, Tierney, Partey, Xhaka, Saka, Odegaard, Martinelli, Lacazette

Subs: Leno, Maitland-Niles, Holding, Cedric, Tavares, Lokonga, Elneny, Smith Rowe, Pepe

Gabriel means business...

11:22 , Matt Verri

11:14 , Matt Verri

Team news to come in about 15 minutes.

Sounds like Arsenal’s will at least have some right-backs to choose from today, but there is still the option of White to play there. Foden likely to miss out today, but plenty of strength in depth for City as ever.

Lovely day for it...

11:03 , Matt Verri

10:56 , Matt Verri

Arsenal are undoubtedly in much better shape than when they were thrashed 5-0 at the Etihad in September, and their young guns should give City a proper test.

If the Gunners can produce another solid defensive display then they just might avoid a 10th straight Premier League defeat against City.

But City look almost unstoppable at the moment and should have too much.

Arsenal 1-3 Man City.

Man City team news

10:43 , Matt Verri

Joao Cancelo has travelled to London and is available after a violent assault on the Portuguese at his family home left him with facial injuries.

Cancelo suffered cuts to the face after attempting to fight off a gang of robbers at his family home on Thursday. But he wishes to be considered for selection despite the incident.

Kyle Walker has returned to training after injury so should Guardiola choose to rest Cancelo, who can operate as either full-back, City could play the England international at right-back, with Oleksandr Zinchenko and Nathan Ake options at left-back.

Riyad Mahrez is available for what is likely to be the last time before he goes off to the Africa Cup of Nations. Rodri and John Stones are back in training after fitness issues and should be available.

Arsenal team news

10:26 , Matt Verri

Calum Chambers and Maitland-Niles have returned to training to ease Arsenal’s right-back crisis.

Arsenal were without all four of their right-back options for their win at Norwich as Maitland-Niles, Chambers, Cedric and Takehiro Tomiyasu all tested positive for Covid-19. Ben White had to fill in at right-back, but Chambers and Maitland-Niles are back in training and could return.

As of Friday, the Gunners had reported no fresh Covid cases, which means they could field the same team who beat Norwich 5-0.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been given permission to join up with Gabon early ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations, so he will once again not be involved.
