A soaring winger who enjoyed the best season of his career last year would “absolutely love” a major move and has confirmed Arsenal have made contact over a deal.
Mikel Arteta cited “discipline” when explaining the reasons his side missed out on signing Mykhaylo Mudryk. Arsenal had a top-end valuation they always intended to stick to. Once Chelsea tabled both a bid and contract offer in excess of Arsenal’s upper limit, a move to Stamford Bridge quickly became the only option.
Arteta subsequently confirmed Arsenal will keep exploring their options and remain open to adding more firepower.
Barcelona’s Raphinha is one option, with the LaLiga side in desperate need of exits this month to balance the books. However, the Spanish giant would rather axe other targets than the ex-Leeds ace who only joined six months ago.
Brighton’s Leandro Trossard has been offered to the Gunners, according to both David Ornstein and the Independent.
Tottenham are understood to have seen a verbal offer worth £12m rejected, meaning Arsenal cannot dither if they do intend to sign the wantaway Belgian.
However, a target who first emerged on Arsenal’s radar at the back end of 2022 has now come back into focus.
Speaking to 90min, Orlando City winger, Facundo Torres, has confirmed Arsenal recently made contact over a move. What’s more, he claimed he’d “absolutely love” to make the career-defining move.
Arsenal contact “confirmed”
“Orlando City confirmed to me that there was contact with Arsenal, but then I left for the World Cup and I didn’t want to hear about a potential transfer at that point,” said Torres.
“So the conversation stayed there but now that I am back with the team, we will see where the conversation goes.
“I would love to play in Europe,” he continued. “It’s a dream I’ve had since I was a kid.
“At the moment I am focused on Orlando City. But La Liga or Premier League would be my targets, and that’s where the rumours are coming from.
“But yeah, I would absolutely love that.”
What sort of player is Facundo Torres?
The 22-year-old Uruguay international moved to America from Penarol last January. The deal cost £7.75m, though his fantastic first season will have ensured his value has soared.
Torres bagged 13 goals and 10 assists in his first season Stateside. The left-footer can operate on either wing and split time almost equally between the left and right flanks during the 2022 campaign.
Torres already has 10 caps to his name for Uruguay and Arsenal interest in the player was first revealed by the Evening Standard in late-October.
Gunners scout Toni Lima is understood to have given Torres a huge thumbs up when detailing the winger to Arsenal chiefs. The South American expert was appointed by the Gunners in 2021 and was credited with being among the first to discover Neymar and Coutinho in their younger days.
In an interesting twist of fate, Torres has played and scored against Arsenal before.
He featured in a pre-season friendly in the Florida Cup on July 20 and found the net when outmuscling a defender, cutting back inside to beat two players and firing inside the near post from outside the area.
Given the player’s comments, it appears a deal is there for the making if Arsenal desire.
