Arsenal secured the "signing of the transfer window" in Thomas Partey, believes former striker Kevin Campbell, who insists the Gunners must now finish in the top four.

Arsenal had been scouting Partey for years and finally triggered a £45million release clause in his Atletico Madrid contract on deadline day.

Campbell believes Atletico "dropped the ball" in placing such an affordable buyout clause in his contract, insisting the 27-year-old is worth considerably more in today's market.

Campbell, who scored 40 goals in 161 appearances for Arsenal, also thinks his former club have brought in a midfielder in his prime, claiming Mikel Arteta can build his side around the Ghanaian.

"Thomas Partey was the signing of the transfer window," he told GentingBet. "For Arsenal to get him for £45 million is tremendous business – they almost went in with balaclavas on and stole him!

"Atletico Madrid dropped the ball by only having a £45million release clause, he is a player that is a lot better than £45million in this current market.

"But that was the release cause and Arsenal met it and they have their man. It is a key position for the club, he is moving into his prime and he will spend those years at the football club, so he is someone that the club can build around in midfield."

Campbell believes the addition of Partey provides a crucial piece of the puzzle Arsenal have been missing for years, insisting anything but a top-four finish would now be a disappointment.

"With Partey added to the mix, Arsenal need to be looking at finishing in the top four," he added.

"Having that key figure defensively, someone who can protect the back is so important in modern day football and Arsenal haven’t had that in years – they’ve had players there who haven’t really liked playing there that have done a job but this is a level above.

"If they don’t get top four that will be disappointing - it needs to be the focus of the team this year."
