Mohamed Salah has revealed that advice from former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has helped him become a Liverpool legend.

The 32-year-old moved to the Reds from AS Roma in July 2017 for an initial £34.3million and has since become one of the best forwards in world football. The Egyptian has scored 221 goals in 366 appearances for Liverpool while he has also contributed 99 assists.

The former Chelsea and FC Basel man has started the 2024/25 season in red-hot form, already contributing to 20 goals in 17 games in all competitions. His form has helped Arne Slot settle in at Liverpool very comfortably following Jurgen Klopp's departure, with the Reds top of the Premier League and Champions League league phase table.

Interestingly, Salah has now revealed that he once sought advice from Wenger when the Frenchman visited Liverpool's training ground. The 75-year-old left the Gunners in 2018 following an extremely successful 22-year spell, which saw him win the Premier League three times, as well as seven FA Cups.

"I got advice from Arsene Wenger before," Salah recently told Liverpool's media channel. “He was at Melwood at that time, and I asked him what’s the difference between… I think it was my first season in Liverpool, then I asked him, ‘What’s the difference between a good player and a really, really good player?’

“He said, ‘I think the very, very good player is always focused on the game, even if he doesn’t have the momentum. He stays in the game until the last minute or until the whistle.’

“I think for me, I know there’s some games I don’t have the momentum, I don’t have the game, but I’m always focused on the game to finish stuff… Johnny (Heitinga) when he came here this year and he was like, ‘Oh, Mo, you’re not playing good today’. I said, ‘Yeah, but I always find the moment’.

“I’m not always very good in the game. It’s normal, we’re still human. But I’m always trying to find a way to change the game.

“I think some players don’t accept the feeling and just keep fighting it. But if you accept it and impress it, it’s nothing. It’s more your imagination, going in your head.

“But I think if you accept it and just impress it, it’s okay. It’s okay to feel that way and it’s okay to have a bad game, but the most important thing is to stay in the game and try to make a difference.”

Salah's future at Liverpool is unclear as his contract with the Reds expires next summer. Although he is now 32 years old it's clear the prolific winger is as driven as ever, with Wenger's advice clearly imprinted in his mind.
