Mikel Arteta has bemoaned the “lack of consistency” with referee decisions after Man Utd handed Arsenal their first defeat of the 2022/23 campaign.
The Gunners made a brilliant start to the new season, winning their first five Premier League games.
They travelled to face Man Utd on Sunday afternoon in what was comfortably their toughest test to date.
Arsenal were the better side for large portions of the game but they ultimately fell to defeat as it finished 3-1 to United.
The Londoners had a goal disallowed in the first half after Paul Tierney checked the pitchside monitor.
Gabriel Martinelli’s goal was chalked off after Martin Odegaard was adjudged to have fouled Christian Eriksen in the build-up.
Man Utd made the most of this reprieve as Antony grabbed a debut goal to make it 1-0 to the hosts before the break.
Arsenal came out firing after the restart though and Bukayo Saka scored from close range to make it 1-1 after an hour.
Man Utd found themselves back ahead just six minutes later as they scored a second goal against the run of play.
Marcus Rashford netted after being set free on goal by Bruno Fernandes. The Englishman later added a third via a clinical counter-attack to take the game away from Arsenal.
The Gunners remain top of the table after this defeat, but they are just a single point clear of reigning champions Manchester City.
Arteta stated post-match that his side were “in total control” for “big periods” of the encounter:
“I am really disappointed to lose the game, especially with the way it went over the 95 minutes. We had some big periods where we were totally dominant and in total control,” Arteta told Sky Sports.
“We created chance after chance but did not close the game. In any moment, when they have open spaces, they are going to hurt you.
“They had three big chances and scored three goals, we have numerous chances and we didn’t score enough.
“We had a period in the first 18 minutes when we struggle and did not control the game but after that, it was all us. We lose the ball in a really difficult place and play a ball in an area we don’t have to and one pass and they are through.
“We should come here and win because of the way we play. Because of the performance and the way we dominated the game.”
When asked if he feels more vindicated than disappointed, he answered: “100%”
On Arsenal’s disallowed goal, Arteta said: “Lack of consistency. One is soft and last week they made a foul on Aaron [Ramsdale] but it is soft, it is not a foul.
“There is a foul on Bukayo, it is soft but not a penalty. Today it is a foul. The threshold in the first actions, you could see there is no yellow card because they want to keep a threshold in a big game. Really difficult to understand.”
