Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has revealed the club are “hoping” to remain active in the transfer market after bringing in five new players.

Gabriel Jesus, Oleksander Zinchenko, Fabio Vieira, Matt Turner and Marquinhos have all joined the Gunners in the summer transfer window.

It has been a superb pre-season for the north Londoners, who beat Chelsea 4-0 in Orlando last week before winning 6-0 against Sevilla on Saturday in their final friendly before kicking off the Premier League season at Crystal Palace on Friday.

Their trip to Selhurst Park promises to be a tough fixture, but optimism is high at the club.

Following Arsenal’s huge victory over Sevilla in the Emirates Cup, Arteta was asked whether or not he is hoping to further improve his squad before the transfer window closes.

“We are still hoping to do something else if the market allows,” he said (quotes via Sam Blitz). “You have seen some movement in the last few days as well.

“We want to get the perfect balance and the plan we wanted from the beginning. Whether we accomplish that or not is another story.”

If Arsenal delve back into the market, they are expected to pursue a new winger and/or central midfielder.

They have been fairly active on transfer deadline day in recent years and this is a trend that may well continue when you take into account Arteta’s comments and current rumours.

Last summer, the Gunners signed Takehiro Tomiyasu from Bologna, a year after Thomas Partey joined on the last day of the window.

The year prior, Kieran Tierney and David Luiz signed on August 8, when deadline day fell in 2019.

Arsenal have been linked with Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans all summer.

The Belgian is reportedly very keen on a move to the Emirates, however, the north Londoners have not yet made an official bid.

He is out of contract at the end of 2022/23, and Arsenal may hold off until then, but if they do not, this is the sort of transfer that may be finalised at the 11th hour.

The Gunners had two bids for Raphinha turned down by Leeds United earlier this summer. The Brazilian has since joined Barcelona, but the Premier League club’s initial interest has indicated that Arteta is still in the market for a winger.

There has been talk about a ‘mystery winger’ – though journalists might be saying this because of the Raphinha bids.

A few names have been mentioned – from Bayern Munich’s Leroy Sane and West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen – but there do not appear to be any concrete links as things stand.
