All Blacks hooker Asafo Aumua has signed a new contract with New Zealand Rugby (NZR), the Hurricanes and Wellington Lions through until the 2025 season.

The Wellington native made his debut for the Lions in New Zealand’s National Provincial Championship (NPC) in 2016 and finished the season as the team’s highest try-scorer with six tries in 10 matches.

He was a member of New Zealand‘s U20 team in 2017 and caught the eye when he scored a hat-trick of tries in their victory over England in that year’s World Rugby U20 Championship final.

He continued with his fine form when he scored a stunning 60-metre try against Canterbury in the NPC and was named in the All Blacks squad for the 2017 end-of-year tour despite not playing Super Rugby yet.

The 25-year-old made his Super Rugby debut for the Hurricanes against the Crusaders in Wellington in 2018 but was sidelined later that year with a wrist injury. Aumua was back in action in 2019 and after several appearances off the replacements bench he returned to the Hurricanes’ starting line-up against the Chiefs in Wellington.

Test debut in 2020

In 2020, he was recalled to the All Blacks squad and made his Test debut against Australia in Brisbane. Aumua was initially contracted until 2023 and is delighted to extend his stay in Wellington.

“Stoked to be returning to the Hurricanes for another two seasons,” he told the Hurricanes’ official website. “The opportunity to represent the club once again is very special.”

Hurricanes head coach Jason Holland believes Aumua’s best is yet to come.

“Brilliant news that Asafo has recommitted to the Hurricanes,” he said. “He is hugely respected by everyone in our environment and is a big part of what we do on and off the field.

“We feel that he has some solid foundations in place to really kick on and take his game to another level and dominate Super and international rugby in the coming years.”
