Ashley Barnes has claimed that there is a conspiracy among Premier League referees to get rid of the Clarets from the top flight.

Burnley once again find themselves in a scrap at the wrong end of the table following a poor season. Indeed, either Mike Jackson’s side or Leeds United will drop to the Championship on Sunday.

The Clarets have been here before, surviving three relegation scares since returning to the Premier League in 2016.

However, Barnes has claimed that there is a growing desire from referees to see Burnley drop back down.

“In recent seasons people look at us and think we’re a hard team, being ugly,” Barnes told BBC Sport.

“No disrespect, I think people, even referees, want us gone from the league.”

As for his reasoning for his claim, Barnes pointed to Burnley’s 1-0 defeat to Tottenham last weekend.

Harry Kane fired wide as Burnley edged closer to half time with the scores level at 0-0. However, referee Kevin Friend then consulted the VAR monitor and found a handball offence in the penalty area.

Kane netted the subsequent spot-kick and helped Tottenham boost their top-four hopes, while adding to Burnley’s relegation fears.

Barnes said: “The whole situation when [Friend] goes to the screen at the weekend, Tottenham played on, they missed a great opportunity and everyone goes to set up for a goal-kick, but then there’s VAR.

“It’s like, ‘what?’. Then he’s smiling when he comes away and no one can speak to him.”

Burnley must accept the situation as it was, knowing that they have come through relegation battles before.

The fact is, Burnley have the upper hand going into Sunday’s final-day battle between them and Leeds to stay up.

The two sides are level on points, but Burnley have a much better goal difference.

As such, Leeds need to better Burnley’s result to have any chance of staying up.

The task for Burnley, then, is clear: win and they ensure their survival whatever happens between Brentford and Leeds in London.

Burnley have shown resilience to come through such battles before.

And while they don’t have Sean Dyche as manager as they have previously had – the squad is very much the same with the same fighting spirit.
