Aston Villa have been boosted by the sight of defenders Matty Cash, Ian Maatsen and Pau Torres joining in training with the rest of the first-team on a wintry morning at Bodymoor Heath on Tuesday. Villa welcome Crystal Palace back to Villa Park this Saturday as the Premier League returns - and with it, a cold snap.

Some players in a video shared by Villa through social media were so comprehensively covered up that only their eyes were visible, such were the frosty conditions at the training ground which met them as they made their way out onto the field.

There are admittedly few senior players remaining in the Villa squad when you take out the internationals; the likes of Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins, Jhon Duran and Leon Bailey are among those still heading back having represented their respective nations this break, but there were heartening signs for supporters concerned by fitness-related withdrawals.

Torres was called up to play for Spain, but was sent home before the first of their Nations League double header because of muscle discomfort. Equally Maatsen was also sent back by Netherlands under 21s with an unspecified 'injury'. Cash, meanwhile, was forced off in the defeat to Tottenham before the break and missed the losses to Club Brugge and Liverpool as a consequence.

While those players partaking in training with the likes of Diego Carlos, Emi Buendia, Tyrone Mings and the returning Lucas Digne, there were no signs in the short video clip of Ezri Konsa, sent home by England, or Ross Barkley. Jacob Ramsey and Boubacar Kamara, both with hamstring problems, are in a race against time to be fit for this weekend, too.
