Aston Villa left-back Ludwig Augustinsson is facing an uncertain future as Unai Emery reportedly wants to terminate his loan, though parent club Sevilla do not want him either.

Augustinsson joined Villa on loan from the Spanish outfit in July 2022. According to trusted source The Athletic, Villa paid £500,000 to sign him for the 2022-23 campaign.

The Swede arrived at Villa Park to compete with Lucas Digne for a starting spot on the left side of defence.

Augustinsson knew he would have to be on top form to get into the first team ahead of Digne. After all, the latter has represented the French national team and was a reliable player during his spell at Everton. Nevertheless, Augustinsson believed he could add something extra to the Villa side.

However, things have not worked out for the full-back in England. He has been limited to five appearances in all competitions, with just three of those coming in the Premier League.

To make matters worse for Augustinsson, Emery has just brought in a new left-back as his first Villa signing. Alex Moreno has arrived in a £12.5m deal from Real Betis. And he will compete with Digne for a starting place, leaving no room for Augustinsson at Villa.

According to Sport Witness, who cite reports coming out of Spain, Emery is aiming to resolve the situation this month and wants Augustinsson gone.

Villa are hoping to ‘break the loan’ agreement they struck with Sevilla in the summer, and send the 28-year-old back to La Liga early. Villa ‘regret’ the fact they ever signed him, too.

Aston Villa will have to pay extra to end loan

The West Midlands side know they will have to pay Sevilla a compensation fee for writing off the loan early. But this could be worth it as Augustinsson’s departure would make some space on the wage bill for a new player to arrive at the club this month.

After being rejected by Villa, things could get worse for Augustinsson as Sevilla do not want him either. He was sub-par during his debut year at Sevilla last season and therefore manager Jorge Sampaoli does not want him.

There is one potential solution to this issue. Villa should be able to strike a deal to end Augustinsson’s loan early, as long as Sevilla find another club to loan him for the remainder of the season.

This would ensure Villa get him off their books and he does not take up space in the Sevilla squad, either.

Finding a team to sign Augustinsson may be tough, given his disappointing couple of years. But maybe Sevilla can find a smaller Spanish team who are happy to take a punt on him.

While Augustinsson looks set to be on his way out of Villa this month, Matteo Guendouzi could arrive at the club.

Fabrizio Romano reveals Villa ‘appreciate’ his talent. And they have since made a bid for his services, though this has been rejected by Marseille. It is now up to Villa to offer more money if they want to get the deal over the line.
