Aston Villa are set to part ways with Wesley Moraes for the upcoming season, as the striker is reportedly on his way to speak with a La Liga 2 team.

Aston Villa spent £22.5million when signing Wesley from Club Brugge three years ago. However, his time with the club has been marred by injuries and poor form.

Wesley has only made 26 appearances for Aston Villa so far, registering six goals and one assist in that time.

He spent the first half of last season back on loan at Club Brugge, before linking up with Brazilian outfit Internacional for the remainder of the campaign.

However, the 25-year-old couldn’t replicate his past form in Belgium. And he didn’t impress in his native Brazil with Internacional, much to their disappointment – and Villa’s too.

Steven Gerrard doesn’t need Wesley in the squad as he can already rely on Ollie Watkins, Danny Ings and Keinan Davis up front. Plus, young forwards Cameron Archer and Louie Barry will probably be ahead of Wesley in Gerrard’s pecking order.

This makes another transfer the best option for the one-cap Brazil international. And Spanish outlet AS (via Sport Witness) reveal a move could soon go through.

Wesley ‘aims’ to become a Levante player in the next few days. And the report states he is currently travelling to Valencia, where the La Liga 2 team is based, to discuss a loan switch.

Wesley set for third loan in two seasons

It will probably be a straight loan as Levante are unlikely to have the funds to capture him permanently. Wesley’s Villa contract runs for two more years, which means they can charge a fee.

Levante are interested in adding Wesley to their ranks. He is a player they wouldn’t normally be able to sign, but the opportunity is there due to a few disappointing years at Villa.

The Spanish club’s only concern is about Wesley passing a medical. He has had injury problems in recent years and this could end up hampering the potential move.

If Wesley leaves on loan this summer, then Villa need to look at getting rid permanently in 12 months’ time. He clearly has no chance of getting into Gerrard’s thinking and the club needs to cut their losses.

They will have to take a big loss on him after spending £22.5m in 2019. But freeing up his space on the wage bill could allow Villa to bring in someone else who can actually contribute.

Meanwhile, a former Villa transfer target has left Britain altogether to join Eredivisie champions Ajax.
