Steven Gerrard has promised to implement a possession-based game and keep things tight at the back as he takes over Aston Villa.

How the new boss will line up his new side at home to Brighton on Saturday should be just one of the many intriguing facets to the 3pm kick-off.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, Gerrard described his approach as a “fresh start” that will not involve rooting through the matches of his predecessor, Dean Smith.

At Rangers, the 4-3-3 was his favoured tactic - a style discarded by Smith when fitting Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins into the same team earlier this campaign. For Gerrard, a lack of central midfield options could push him into a 4-4-2.

The 41-year-old stated: “Aston Villa are the eighth top scorers in the league, we have exciting players in the final third and we have good creation too.

“The club is conceding too many goals, 18th in the Premier League, so we need to be harder to play against and need to improve. With that, we will move up the league.”

He added: “We will become a possession-based team, when we can transition into that, time will tell.”

The new manager has Ings back in contention with Trezeguet on the road to recovery and in training having last played in April. Douglas Luiz (hamstring) and Ezri Konsa (suspended) are out, while Bertrand Traore (thigh) and Marvelous Nakamba (groin) are doubts.

Predicted Aston Villa XI: Martinez; Cash, Tuanzebe, Mings, Targett; Buendia, J Ramsey, McGinn, Young; Ings, Watkins.
