Europe, led by the ever-dominant Fionnuala Britton who secured the win with victory in the 6km race, took the overall spoils at Holyrood Park scoring 154 points to GB's 175 and America's 201.

The GB team were forced to settle for second overall and while the senior performances were solid if not spectacular the junior women's team showed they are the stars of the future.

Former World Championship 1500m silver medallist and 2012 Olympian Lisa Dobriskey finished seventh in the women's 3km.

In the women's 6km GB's Jess Coulson, 22, the European Under-23 cross-country champion, finished fourth in a strong field. Olympian Julia Bleasdale was the second Brit home as Britton took the victory to seal a memorable day for Europe.

However in the junior women's 4km the GB girls filled the top six spots with 2011 European Cross Country champion Emelia Gorecka taking the win ahead of Jess Judd, with Rebecca Weston in third.

"The juniors in particular dominated today and they showed a huge strength in depth in what was a really good demonstration of top class athletics," said Black - who took over from Charles van Commenee post London 2012.

In the men's 8km race GB's Tom Humphries produced a storming run to lead for the bulk of the race however he was hauled in inside the last 400m by eventual winner Bobby Mack from USA.

Humphries, having seen 2012 ruined by pneumonia, looked in great shape to challenge for the win but faded to fourth as Mack pipped Ayad Lamdassem by just a second to win in 24.27 minutes with GB's Andy Vernon third.

"It was a really encouraging performance for me," said Humphries. "I am looking forward to the track season now this summer.

"It was great to be running alongside such top athletes and that is what I want to be doing again in the summer."
