Steph Twell might be advocating a slowly-but-surely approach to her 2013 season but that isn’t stopping the former world junior champion targeting Commonwealth Games glory next year.

Back in 2010 Steph Twell was the great hope of GB middle distance running, tipped for stardom at London 2012 and beyond.

However a bad run of injuries – a broken ankle in 2011 followed by a stress fracture in Olympic year – ensured she didn't make it to the capital.

As a result Twell is tentatively making steps back onto the global scene this year however she remains confident she can launch a challenge for silverware in 2014.

With Glasgow hosting the Commonwealth Games next year Twell – who competes for Scotland – has a golden opportunity for home-soil glory.

She said: "Probably one of my biggest aims is to get the qualifying time this year for the Commonwealth Games, because I’ve been in the position last year where I was chasing times [for the Olympics] and that's such a horrible position to be in and it really does put that element of extra pressure on you.

"I want to have a full season, run strongly and start getting qualifying times – that will set me up strongly for 2014."

Twell claimed bronze over 1500m in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in India, while finishing fourth over her more favoured 5000m.

And the 23-year-old believes she can get herself in shape to repeat the trick with 12 months of consolidation ahead of her.

"It gives me that drive to know that, as I've done it before, it is achievable. I'll see what happens," she added. "I'm not playing around this year, but I've got to see where I am, because my body just hasn't been into high-end training for such a long time. So for me it's all just stepping stones back to where I was.

"I don’t want to shy away from 1,500. I can do the training, but it takes another level to do 1,500m training. A bit more specific.

"I know that I need to still capitalise on what my body can give. I need to start building to 1,500 training and hopefully see the fruits of it next year. It's going to come as part of training rather than putting all the eggs in the basket, I think."
