Reds code-hopping wing Suliasi Vunivalu maintains that he would love to represent the Wallabies at the 2023 Rugby World Cup despite speculation he could return to rugby league.

It has been a difficult season thus far for the 26-year-old, who made his first start of the Super Rugby Pacific season on Friday after suffering from a string of hamstring injuries.

Return from injury

Vunivalu was grateful to return to the field and all the more fitting in the same ground he played so many games for rugby league side Melbourne Storm.

“It was a bit emotional,” Vunivalu told AAP.

“It’s been a long and frustrating process so it was good to be back playing again.

“This is where I played so many games so I was excited to get back home.”

Vunivalu is set to decline a lucrative deal with NRL side the Dolphins in favour of attempting to play himself into Wallaby coach Dave Rennie’s World Cup squad.

The wing is only focused on controlling what he can on the field and producing a string of good performances for the Reds.

“Yes, I’d love to play in the World Cup,” Vunivalu said.

“This is my last year on my contract so I’m just trying to focus on playing good footy.

“There’s been rumours around (about league) – I’m not sure if my manager’s not telling me anything – but I’m just trying to get back to playing again and let my footy do the talking.”

Reds coach Brad Thorn was delighted to see Vunivalu back on the field, and seeing him enjoy being out there is a starting point to work with.

“He’s just a really lovely guy,” Thorn said of Vunivalu.

“The directive for the game was just go out and enjoy your rugby – I didn’t ask to see anything but for him enjoy it and he did that so we will go from here.”
