Ayoze Perez has opened the door to an exit from Leicester City after reports emerged about interest from a La Liga club.

Perez has been with Leicester since 2019, when he joined from Newcastle United. Now, he is entering the final year of the contract he originally agreed to.

As a result, there have been suggestions of a departure for the Spaniard. Back in his native country, Real Betis were recently named as admirers by ABC Sevilla.

Now, the Daily Mirror are suggesting that Perez is indeed open to a departure from the King Power Stadium. After all, he only started six Premier League matches last season.

The Mirror have reiterated Real Betis’ interest in Perez, but acknowledge the Seville-based side must sell players before being able to pursue targets of their own.

Still, the 28-year-old would be willing to head back to his native country. He has not played in Spain since leaving Tenerife for Newcastle United in 2014.

In fact, since Tenerife were in the Spanish second tier at the time, Perez has never played in La Liga. Should Real Betis manage to make space for him, though, that could change this summer.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side will have Europa League football on offer next season after a fifth-place finish in 2021-22. In contrast, Leicester missed out on continental qualification.

Spanish switch should be next step for Ayoze Perez

Therefore, it could be time for a fresh start for Perez elsewhere – and Real Betis would be a good club to join.

Leicester are unlikely to recoup the £30m fee (which was a short-lived club record) that they paid Newcastle for Perez’s services three years ago. Since then, he has scored 14 goals and provided 11 assists from exactly 100 appearances.

In contrast, during his Newcastle days, he got 48 goals and 17 assists from 195 games. Hence, from just under double the amount of appearances, he contributed to more than double the number of goals.

For whatever reason, his time with Leicester has not quite worked out. Therefore, ahead of his 29th birthday later this month, it could be in everybody’s best interests to find a new solution.
