Azarenka, who was victorious at the China Open in Beijing on Sunday, completely outclassing Maria Sharapova to claim her 13th WTA trophy, moved into the next round with ease, although she tried to deny the fact.

"It was definitely not easy," Azarenka said afterwards. "I've done something incredible last week. The court here is different but I did well to adapt.

"Being (world number one) means you're more targeted by the other players. I just try to stick to my own game."

The 21-year-old Dutch player, who is ranked at number 69 in the world, was only able to muster two games in the entire match – both in the second set – as she was totally blown away by her opponent.

It is the penultimate competition of the top seed’s schedule for the year, with the WTA Championships to follow.

Azarenka will next take on Simona Halep of Romania in the second round.

Fifth seed Julia Goerges of Germany was in second-round action, meanwhile, and overcame Romina Oprandi of Switzerland 6-3 6-3.

Goerges will next face Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden, who beat Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic 6-4 7-6(4) in the day's final match.

There were still some first-round matches played on Wednesday, as second seed and former world number one Ana Ivanovic beat Monica Niculescu of Romania 7-5 6-3.

The Serb, who is ranked 12th in the world these days, will face Germany's Andrea Petkovic in the second round.

There was a crowd-pleasing win for a local player against German opposition as Patricia Mayr-Achleitner world number 151 surprised eighth seed Sabine Lisicki 6-1 6-3.

The former world number 70 now faces Croatia's Petra Martic for a place in the third round.
