It’s been a dreadful season for West Bromwich Albion on the pitch, bottom of the Premier League table and heading for relegation, with a side full of underperforming players. It’s also been a disaster off the pitch too. With Tony Pulis sacked early on in the season, Alan Pardew was judged to be the right man to lead The Baggies to safety. How wrong they were.

Alan Pardew’s appointment has been a failure.
Alan Pardew’s appointment has been a failure.

That decision was made, in part, by Nick Hammond, the club’s technical director, who also brought in a raft of new players in the summer and winter transfer windows, most of which turned out to be poor signings. The fact that the club has recognised his failings, and replaced him with Italian Giuliano Terraneo, is a positive step.

Giuliano Terraneo’s last role was at Fenerbahce.Hammond’s transfer record at West Brom was very poor. Since his arrival in May 2016, the club have spent close to £70 million on the likes of Oliver Burke, Jake Livermore, Nacer Chadli, Jay Rodriguez, Allan Nyom, Kieran Gibbs and Yuning Zhang. Which of those players can be classed as genuinely good signings?

Chairman John Williams and Chief Executive Martin Goodman were also sacked earlier in the season for allowing such a big outlay on a number of under-performing players, putting the club’s financial status at risk. The club’s owner, Guochuan Lai, trusted these men to lead the club forward and keep the team in the Premier League. All too often, it’s the Head Coach or players that feel the brunt of criticism when a club under-performs. But in this case, and quite rightly, Hammond, Williams and Goodman have paid the price for their woeful performance off the pitch.

With the club embarking on a new direction at board level, fans will hope Albion can rebuild in the right way and tackle the Championship at the first time of asking. Terraneo is going to be a busy man over the next few months.
