“Bad Form Was On My Mind, Especially After The IPL,” Says Yuzvendra Chahal After Omission From T20 World Cup 2021 Squad

Team India leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has thanked his well-wishers for their constant support after he was surprisingly left out of the national squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2021 to be played in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Oman from October 17 onwards.

India’s 15-member main squad and three reserves were announced by the BCCI a couple of days back and featured just one wrist spinner in Rahul Chahar, while Varun Chakravarthy was chosen for his mystery spin abilities. However, many were surprised to see the name of Yuzvendra Chahal missing from the list.

Chahal, along with left-arm Chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav reigned supreme for two years after India’s 2017 Champions Trophy final loss, when they replaced Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin in India’s white-ball plans.

They performed well picking up wickets in South Africa, UAE, England, and Australia, and wherever India went and even at home. Chahal became the first Indian bowler to pick up a fifer in T20Is when he picked 6/25 against England.

However, ICC World Cup 2019 proved to be the start of the downfall for the duo. Chahal went for 88 runs in 10 overs against England, the most expensive figures by an Indian bowler in World Cups. Kuldeep fell off the radar completely, but Chahal managed to keep himself in selectors’ contention, but with the introduction of new spinners and the re-emergence of Ravindra Jadeja, proved to be too much for the Haryana leggie.

“I see people’s messages, feels good to be loved. It’s your closest ones that pick you up when you are down,” said Yuzvendra Chahal in a video on Aakash Chopra’s YouTube channel.

A sharp dip in form in international cricket in the last 18 months and an underwhelming performance in the first leg of IPL 2021 proved to be the final nail in his chances to make it into the T20 World Cup 2021 squad.

2021 has not been kind to Chahal as he was dropped from Team India’s playing XI after poor performances in the first three T20Is against England earlier this year. In the first half of the IPL 2021, Chahal has just 4 wickets in 7 games at an average of 47.80 and a costly economy rate of 8.26.

“Bad form was playing on my mind a bit, especially after the IPL. I sat down with my wife Dhanashree who helped me. She told me that every day you won’t take wickets, it’s just a bad phase. I knew that I was bowling well but sometimes in T20 cricket, it’s very hard to take wickets if a batsman doesn’t attack. It affects you when you don’t have wickets to show in the column,’’ he revealed.

He did pick 5 wickets in 2 ODIs against Sri Lanka on the recent tour, but tested positive for COVID, missing two T20Is against them.
