From Delish

Japanese Week was a first for the tent, and in true Bake Off style, there were plenty of curveballs. As well as steamed buns and matcha pancake cakes, the bakers were tasked with making kawaii cakes, but unfortunately one of them was "inedible". Uh-oh.

Paul Hollywood doesn’t do gherkins

There were some last-minute ingredient emissions this week as Paul revealed to Mark and Lottie that he distinctly hates gherkins mere moments before they were about to put them in their burger-themed buns. I have said this before, but as the weeks go on, you start to get savvy about what the judges like and definitely do NOT like.

Someone could make the best liquorice in the world, but I'd still have to spit it out as I hate it that much. And if you put something in your bake that Paul hates, well you might as well book your train ticket home then and there. When I was on the show, I listened very carefully to the feedback on everyone’s bakes and noted what flavours the judges did and didn’t like. Paul likes really strong, punchy flavours – he hates anything that is remotely subtle, or – dare I say it – bland.

Grass Matcha crepe cake

On the topic of flavours, this week’s Technical was all about celebrating matcha, and I have to admit, I’m with Laura on this one – I think it tastes like grass, and I wouldn’t know how to use it properly in a bake. All things considered, I think they all did really well with the crepe cakes.

Tearful goodbyes

There were lots of tears this week – both during the stressful bakes (poor Laura) and upon hearing the sad news that Mark would be leaving the tent. By Week 6, things are getting serious, and to the bakers, crying over a cake is nothing unusual and certainly not to be considered being overdramatic. I lived and breathed baking when I did Bake Off, and it was all I thought about from the moment I woke up until I had to go to sleep. Even then, I’d have cake nightmares! It consumes your life when you’re on the show – in a good way – but that is why bakers can get emotional over a bit of bad buttercream. Don’t judge us!

My favourite bake of the week

This week, my favourite bake has to be Marc’s Hamish cake. I’ve seen a photo of Marc's dog Hamish, and I have to say, I am in love! It sounded like it tasted amazing, and it was so well designed, so what’s not to love?!

The bake that needed the most improvement

I was so sad to see Mark go this week as I thought his little avocado cakes were adorable. But the word “inedible” came out of Paul’s mouth, and that’s never going to end well. It sure is getting harder and harder to say goodbye to the bakers now.
