Dean Saunders thinks Gareth Bale should sign for Newcastle United on a free transfer this summer amid interest from Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur.

Bale is leaving Real Madrid upon the expiry of his contract. He won the Champions League five times during his time in Spain.

The forward had a spell on loan at Tottenham last season and he only played seven times for Real Madrid during the 2021/22 campaign.

He is looking for a new club ahead of this winter’s World Cup in Qatar. It was reported on Thursday that Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are all interested in him.

Saunders played 75 times for Wales and he has advised Bale on his next move. The 57-year-old thinks he “would slot in” at Newcastle:

“If I could pick a club for him to go to now, I’d say sign for Newcastle,” Saunders told talkSPORT.

“They’ve got a project; they’re going in the right direction – he would slot in.

“The fans right now in Newcastle, because I’ve been there and I worked there – and I realise how much they love the club – right now they could sell 80,000 season tickets.”

Bale has also been linked with a move to Championship side Cardiff City. He has kept the door open to this transfer, insisting that the standard of the league he will play in doesn’t make “too much of a difference”:

“I know possible destinations,” he added. “I don’t really know if the standard makes too much of a difference, to be honest. Football games are football games. I feel like I’ll never really lose my quality on the ball, so I guess it’s a conversation to be had.

“I’ve been available for quite a lot of the games in Spain. Sometimes you just don’t get picked so people assume that you’re injured; it’s just that perception.

“People think I play a lot of golf, but I actually don’t; people think I’m injured a lot but I’m actually not.”
