Jorginho has given a telling update on his future, with his contract running down and Barcelona waiting in the wings for a transfer.
Jorginho has been one of the most important members of Chelsea’s side for some time. Indeed, other than Cesar Azpilicueta and N’Golo Kante, the Italian is the Blues’ longest-serving player.
In his four years at the club, Jorginho has racked up 204 appearances. He has also scored 29 goals and provided nine assists during that time.
His role in the midfield is, naturally, an important one. Given Chelsea frequently play with a back five, meaning the wing-backs bomb up, cover from midfield is important.
Jorginho has been involved in a good deal of success during his time at Stamford Bridge. The midfielder has won both the Europa League and Champions League.
He was key to the Champions League win, missing just one game, through suspension.
His role has been as important as ever of late. Indeed, with a few Chelsea midfielders having sustained injuries, he has had to step up his game.
Jorginho is the Blues’ fourth-most used player so far this season, having missed just one game.
Jorginho contract uncertainty given clarity
Given his crucial role in the side, Chelsea will want Jorginho to remain at the club for the foreseeable future. However, his deal runs out at the end of the season.
As yet, there has been little clarity on what will happen with his contract.
That has led to Barcelona sniffing around. Indeed, the Spanish giants are seemingly keen on snaring the midfielder, should he not want to remain at Stamford Bridge.
There has been no concrete movement on the contract front as yet, However, Jorginho may have given Chelsea fans the answer they want to hear.
“I’m very happy at the moment, we’re all very focused on what we need to do,” he told The 5th Stand.
“I’m enjoying life here. I’m enjoying working with everyone and I think everybody says the same thing. It’s enjoyable to be at Chelsea.”
Given he is happy to be playing at Chelsea, it would be a surprise if he was to want to move on.
However, he has not outright said he will not be leaving the club. Furthermore, there does not look to be a new contract in the works just yet.
It has been the case before for players to say they are happy at a club and still leave.
While he may not want to, if Chelsea do not offer him a contract, Jorginho might need to depart. It would be a big surprise if they were not to offer him a new deal, though.
