Barcelona have made Sergio Reguilon their top left-back target and reportedly feel they can bargain with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy.

The La Liga side have made statement after statement this summer with their transfer spending. Despite arriving in the off-season with serious financial difficulties, they have made some top signings.

Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha are the marquee signings from Bayern Munich and Leeds United, respectively.

Furthermore, they have stolen more of the limelight away from Chelsea this week. The Blues thought they had a deal wrapped up for Jules Kounde until Barca stepped in and snapped up the Sevilla star.

But as Spanish newspaper AS reports, that is not the end of Barcelona’s planned transfer statements or spending.

They want a left-back in, with Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso their first target. Given how the Kounde deal panned out, though, Chelsea are now less receptive to losing the 31-year-old.

And that is why Barca believe they can snatch Alonso’s fellow Spaniard Reguilon from across London at Tottenham.

Barca chiefs Mateu Alemany and Jordi Cruyff discussed a Reguilon transfer at a meal on July 19 with Kia Joorabchian, one of the player’s agents. They reportedly discussed the idea of either a straight-up transfer, a loan or a loan with an option to buy.

As for the first option, Spurs have valued Reguilon at €25million (£21million). But AS claims that Barca believe that fee ‘will be lowered’.

The La Liga side note that Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has Matt Doherty, Ryan Sessegnon and new signing Ivan Perisic at his left-back or left wing-back disposal.

And Barca think that means Tottenham could be persuaded down on their value of Reguilon.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is a notoriously tough negotiator. It remains unclear whether he will budge on his demands.

Reguilon facing tougher Tottenham battle

Reguilon has played a key role at times for Tottenham since his move from Real Madrid in 2020, but the battle for game time on that left-hand side will now become harder.

Perisic has the title-winning know how having won Serie A with Conte at Inter. Sessegnon is a bright young player who Conte thinks has an exciting future ahead.

Sessegnon filled in for Reguilon at the back end of last season, when the Spaniard and Matt Doherty were out injured. Before then, Doherty proved his versatility to Conte by playing on the right.

And ahead of the new season, Reguilon did not make it into Conte’s pre-season Tottenham tour squad.

As such, it will be interesting to see how Conte lines up at wing-back for the rest of pre-season and for the opening Premier League game of the season.

How Reguilon fares against his competitors in August will determine his future – if indeed his future remains unresolved by then.
