According to Steve McManaman, Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong would be wrong to join Man Utd this summer as he is provided with “a more exciting challenge” if he stays in Spain.

De Jong is reportedly rated at £65m and he is being heavily linked with a summer move to Man Utd.

The Dutchman worked with Erik ten Hag during their time together at Ajax. An initial fee of €75m (£63m) was paid by Barcelona to sign him at the start of 2019.

Can Paulo Dybala still be a hero anywhere but Juventus? He should avoid Ronaldo

The 25-year-old has been an ever-present for the Spanish giants over the past few seasons. He has played 139 times for them across all competitions.

Barcelona are now managed by Xavi and they are being linked with the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Andreas Christensen ahead of this summer.

McManaman does not think Man Utd are the right club for the centre-midfiedler:

“Manchester United could potentially sign Frenkie de Jong as I don’t think he’s had the greatest time at Barcelona,” McManaman told HorseRacing.net.

“I know that Barcelona have just got themselves back into the Champions League for next season and they are building something there, but he does have a relationship with Erik ten Hag, so maybe it’s a case of him not feeling the love in Barcelona.

“Playing for Barcelona on the rise or Manchester United on the rise is a completely different thing when one’s playing in the Champions League and the other one isn’t.

“For him to go to Manchester United then I think they’d have to pay him more than he’s earning at Barcelona, which I think will be a really hard thing to do considering that he went to Barcelona for a huge amount of money.

“You’d rather stay at Barcelona in the Champions League with Xavi trying to change things around. Players like [Andreas] Christensen and [Robert] Lewandowski potentially coming in makes that a more exciting challenge in my opinion.”

Elsewhere, The Telegraph are reporting that Argentine defender Lisandro Martinez has been added to Ten Hag’s summer wishlist.

It is guaranteed to be a busy summer at Old Trafford and Martinez could be a handy addition having played under Ten Hag for three years. The 24-year-old can play centre-half, left-back and defensive midfield.

The Argentine has played 37 matches across all competitions this term and joined Ajax from Defensa for around £6.3m.

Ten Hag sees Martinez as an ‘ideal player’ to pursue and it is claimed that the Eredivisie champions are looking for a fee in the region of £25m to let him leave.
