Barcelona are reportedly willing to let Memphis Depay depart the Nou Camp in January – with the player hoping to use the upcoming World Cup as a chance to showcase his talents to his Premier League suitors.
The Netherlands winger moved to the Nou Camp in June 2021, signing on a free transfer after his deal at Lyon expired. It was with the Ligue 1 side that the former Manchester United winger was able to find his best form. Indeed, he scored 76 goals in 178 appearances for the club, with Memphis finally making good on his early potential.
However, his move to Barcelona has not exactly worked out as planned. He has found himself sparsely-used by coach Xavi Hernandez with the Blaugrana having a wealth of options in attack. However, he managed to make 38 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring 13 times.
The summer signing of Raphinha, together with the contract renewal of Ousmane Dembele, however, has seriously reduced his prospects. And the former PSV man has endured a miserable time of things this season, playing in just three games.
The 28-year-old’s deal is due to expire in summer 2023 and the forward will not be handed an extension.
As such, Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Depay will likely be on the move once again. And the transfer expert, writing for Caught Offside, believes a move away is on the cards as soon as January.
However, he insists that no clubs have made their move for the winger yet, who will look to use the 2022 World Cup to put himself in the shop window.
Fabrizio Romano on Memphis Depay future
“Memphis Depay’s future is open. There’s a chance he will go in January, yes – but the decision also depends on the proposals – he’s free agent in June so he’d only accept a top club.
“At the moment, I’m told there are no negotiations with any club and the World Cup could be important chance for him.”
In terms of a next destination, it seems increasingly likely that a move to the Premier League could be on the cards.
Indeed, 90min report that Tottenham head up a queue of clubs looking to sign the man once compared to a Peruvian flute player.
Antonio Conte is looking for more options in attack with Harry Kane looking jaded. In addition, Dejan Kulusevski, Richarlison, Lucas Moura and Son Heung-min have all been missing for spells this season.
However, they are far from alone with Arsenal also reportedly among his suitors too. Mikel Arteta wants to add another winger to his ranks and Memphis, for a cut-price fee, or even on a pre-contact agreement, may fit the bill.
Manchester United are also reportedly considering a move. Erik ten Hag is looking to add more depth to his attack, especially amid ongoing doubts over Cristiano Ronaldo. He was first mentioned as a target back in the summer.
The winger made 53 appearances during a previous spell at Old Trafford. However, he departed having been classed as a failure and with just seven goals to his name.
However, any return to United would come as a surprise, despite the player’s major improvement since.
