Barcelona vice-president Rafa Yuste has said the club has been in contact with Lionel Messi about a possible return to the Camp Nou.

Messi made a tearful farewell to Barcelona in 2021 after the Catalan club were unable to offer him a new deal amid major financial woes, instead signing a two-year contract with Paris Sant-Germain which expires this summer.

Barca have made little secret of their desire to bring the World Cup winner back to the club, and at a press conference on Friday Yuste said they had been in touch with the Argentinian’s representatives.

“Leo and his family know the affection I have for them,” Yuste said. “I participated in the negotiations which unfortunately did not lead to a certain result.

“I’ve always had and I have this thorn in my side that Leo couldn’t continue at our club.

“Messi knows how much we appreciate him. I would love for him to come back. We’re in contact, of course, with them.”

World Cup winner Messi revealed earlier this month that he now feels much more settled in Paris after an up and down time at PSG.

And the Argentina international expressed his desire to win the title with Paris, he said: “It’s true that I feel very well. The first year, I needed a little time to adapt to Paris for different reasons, but I started this season really differently, with a lot of desire.

“I feel more comfortable with the club, with the city, with everything that Paris means. And the truth is that I am really enjoying this season. I think my whole life has been like that.

“About dedication, work, effort and wanting more every day. I’ve arrived at a new club and I want to win the title with Paris.”

Speaking of his relationship with PSG team-mate Kylian Mbappe, Messi added: “To be able to achieve the big goals we set ourselves at the beginning of the season. Kylian scored three incredible goals, in a final.

“And now it’s true that it’s nice to be able to play in the same team with him, and I hope we can do great things here in Paris.”
