Washington Capitals coach Barry Trotz is a big teddy bear, but he’s built like D-cell battery. This comes in handy on those rare occasions when standing behind an NHL bench becomes hazardous. Saturday night was one of those occasions.

As the Capitals and the Toronto Maple Leafs battled in the first period, a puck deflected off the skate of defenseman Karl Alzner and into the Washington bench. Specifically, off the noggin of Trotz, leaving a noticeable mark.

Ref cam caught the moment and the reaction, via Sportsnet:

That reaction from Trotz is why he is, in Canadian parlance, “a beauty.” Takes a puck off the head, shows a little color and just shrugs the whole thing off.

Furthering that beautiful reaction were Trotz’s postgame comments:

Alas, Trotz was left with a real headache after the game: a 4-2 loss to the Leafs in which the Capitals were skated out of the building by a faster team, which is becoming an issue.
