Baseball-Major League Baseball roundup

July 23 (The Sports Xchange) - For the last three days, thousands of fans adorned in the hats and shirts of the Seattle Mariners and New York Mets have descended upon Cooperstown, N.Y., to celebrate the induction of Ken Griffey Jr. and Mike Piazza into the Hall of Fame. The two men will be officially enshrined Sunday afternoon at the Clark Sports Center. Griffey will be the first inductee to wear a Mariners hat into the Hall of Fame, though the Hall considers Randy Johnson -- who went in last year wearing the cap of the Arizona Diamondbacks -- to represent the Mariners because he pitched more games for Seattle. Piazza will be the second Mets representative as well as the second inductee to sport a Mets hat on his plaque. He follows in the footsteps of Tom Seaver, who was enshrined in 1992. - - - Philadelphia Phillies catcher Cameron Rupp left Saturday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the third inning after being hit by a Tyler Glasnow pitch near his left ear. Rupp crouched near the plate after being hit and received medical attention before walking back to the dugout. Backup catcher Carlos Ruiz pinch ran for Rupp and replaced him in the lineup. The Phillies later reported that Rupp had "no ill effects" after being further evaluated. - - - Pirates right-hander Tyler Glasnow left his second career start in the fourth inning because of an undisclosed injury. Glasnow gave up two runs on four hits in 3 1/3 innings. - - - The San Diego Padres agreed to terms with top Cuban prospect Jorge Ona on a minor league contract with a $7 million signing bonus. The contract with the 19-year-old outfielder is pending a physical, general manager A.J. Preller said Friday. The contract starts in 2017 for Ona, who was ranked the No. 8 international prospect in the 2016 class by MLB.com. In February, Baseball America rated him the fourth-best Cuban player on the market. In 2014 , Ona hit .319 for Cuba's 18U National League, prior to playing in the 2014 COPABE 18U Pan American Championship in Mexico, where he hit .636 (14-for-22) with four home runs over eight games in the tournament Ona is expected to play in the fall instructional league and then report for spring training and start his pro career next season. - - - The Mariners placed shortstop Ketel Marte on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with mononucleosis. Marte, 22, complained of a sore throat following last Sunday's game. He didn't travel with the team for an eight-game road trip that began Friday at Toronto. The move is retroactive to July 20. The Mariners also recalled left-handed reliever David Rollins from Triple-A Tacoma. - - - Toronto Blue Jays right fielder Jose Bautista (turf toe) was 0-for-3 for Triple-A Buffalo on Friday, the second game of his rehabilitation assignment. Bautista was 1-for-3 with a homer with Class A Dunedin on Wednesday. He has not played since June 16 and is scheduled to rejoin Toronto on Monday. - - - Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Ryan Vogelsong, who had facial surgery in May after being hit by a pitch, was eligible to come off the disabled list but did not because of neck stiffness.
