Bath Rugby injury latest ahead of Exeter Chiefs: Sam Underhill, Beno Obano, Cam Redpath, Jaco Coetzee
Bath Rugby face the possibility of being without England star Sam Underhill for one of the club’s biggest games of the season with La Rochelle coming to the Recreation Ground in the Champions Cup in 11 days’ time.
Underhill injured his ankle scoring a try for England on Sunday in the 59-14 win over Japan at the Alliance Stadium, Twickenham, and looks highly likely to miss Saturday evening’s return to the Gallagher Premiership when Exeter Chiefs come to town looking for their first league win of the season against the table-toppers.

Speaking on Tuesday, Bath head of rugby van Graan said: “Our medical team has been in contact with the English medical team. That relationship is strong and good between all the nations our players are with. With an injury, it is not as straightforward that it happens and you know straight away. We are taking our time. Sam has gone through a scan and we are determining what the best course of action is and we will know towards the back end of the week whether he can come straight back in, it is a few weeks out, or potentially longer. Unfortunately, we don’t have all the answers right now.”
Bath also look set to be without number eight Jaco Coetzee against Chiefs after the South African suffered a head knock in Saturday’s 40–7 win against Bedford Blues, but as has been well advertised, the club’s embarrassment of riches in the back row means van Graan is hardly short of options with Guy Pepper, Ted Hill, Alfie Barbeary and Miles Reid to call upon.
Van Graan looks likely to rest the likes of Ollie Lawrence and Will Stuart this weekend with England players required to miss one of the next three games as part of the latest agreement between clubs and the RFU to ensure international stars are not overplayed. Max Ojomoh shook off the rust as he made his return from injury last weekend at Bedford to provide depth in the midfield, but Scottish international Cam Redpath remains a doubt having not featured for his country this Autumn either.
Van Graan said: “Cam pulled out before the Quins game as a precaution and that injury [to his leg= was a bit more serious than we antipated. We will make a call at the back end of the week.”
There was also speculation that loosehead prop Beno Obano missed out on being involved for England A against Australia earlier in the month due to injury and van Graan confirmed he has an issue with his foot.
He said: “Beno injured his foot early in the season which he has reinjured and we will see where he is at the back end of the week.”
