Bayern Munich CEO Oliver Kahn has responded to speculation that the club could replace Robert Lewandowski with Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane.

After weeks of speculation, Lewandowski is now all set to become a Barcelona player. The striker will be bringing an end to a spectacular spell in the Bundesliga. By joining Barcelona, he will hope to boost his Ballon d’Or credentials.

Bayern must work out how to replace someone who has scored 40 goals or more in each of the past seven seasons. For the most recent three, he has scored more goals than the number of games he has played.

Hence, Lewandowski will leave a large void. One man Bayern have already brought in to get goals is Sadio Mane from Liverpool. But there have subsequently been links with England captain Kane as another prolific attacking target.

A deal may wait until 2023, rather than this summer. But it could be something Bayern consider by then, especially given his contract with Tottenham Hotspur would only have 12 months remaining at that point (just like Mane’s did this year).

Now, Bayern chief Kahn has described Kane as an “absolute top striker” – vowing only to “see what happens” in relation to the chances of him joining Bayern.

“He is under contract at Tottenham,” Kahn told Bild. “Sure, he is an absolute top striker, but that’s all a dream of the future.

“So let’s see what happens.”

Kane possibility remains open but Ronaldo ruled out

Another suggestion for Bayern’s attack this summer has been Cristiano Ronaldo. The Manchester United forward may want to find a Champions League club ahead of the new season.

Bayern have been named as one of the few conceivable contenders for his signature. On the record, though, they continue to play down any links with the Portuguese legend.

Kahn’s latest comments suggest their stance has not changed.

“I love Cristiano Ronaldo and everyone knows what a fantastic player he is,” he said. “But every club has a certain philosophy and I’m not sure if it would be the right signal for Bayern if we signed him.”

Although they have been relying on a striker in his mid-30s, it seems they may not want to sign one.

Kane, meanwhile, will only turn 30 next July. He has scored 20 goals or more for eight consecutive seasons and is well in his prime.

Kane considered leaving Tottenham for Manchester City last summer, but no deal could be done. There have been indications of him signing a new contract in north London now, which may scupper any hopes Bayern have of luring him to Germany next year.
