Benjamin Pavard seems increasingly unhappy at Bayern Munich, and a move to one of Chelsea or Manchester United could materialise as a result.
Pavard has enjoyed a good period of his career with Bayern. Indeed, the right-back has played 136 games for the German giants since moving from Stuttgart.
In that time, he has had both personal and team success. He has contributed to 19 goals in the span of just over three seasons at Bayern.
Nine of those goal contributions came in his first season, showing he adapted to the move well. He has also won the Bundesliga on three occasions, as well as being part of the Champions League-winning side in 2019/20.
However, as time has gone on, it seems he has become less happy with his situation. Reports over the summer claimed that the Frenchman was considering his future.
That was because he apparently wanted to feature more as a central defender, rather than a full-back or wing-back.
Those reports led to interest from some big teams. In the Premier League, both Chelsea and Man Utd registered an interest in the defender.
They were joined by Juventus and Atletico Madrid, as per reports. However, nothing came of the interest, and Pavard remained a Bayern Munich player.
Pavard unhappy at Bayern
While Pavard stayed put over the summer, it seems he is now unhappy in his current situation. That is thanks to a video shared by journalist Florian Plettenberg.
The video sees Pavard walking out of a training session on his own. Plettenberg said Pavard was the ‘first person who left the locker room yesterday’ and the ‘first person to leave the green today’.
He added that there was ‘no eye contact’ with coaches. Indeed, it seems that there is a rift between Pavard and the coaching staff and/or players.
Plettenberg also said there have been ‘no concrete talks’ between the player and the club regarding a new contract.
The Frenchman’s deal runs out in June 2024. As such, at this stage, he would be able to walk away from Bayern for free at the end of next season.
However, if recent reports are anything to go by, he may want to force his way out before that time comes.
Chelsea, Man Utd could benefit
If Pavard does want to leave, one of Chelsea or United could be the beneficiaries.
Indeed, they have both reportedly held an interest in him at times in the past. Chelsea have been linked with a number of right-backs of late.
While Reece James walks into the side when fit, he has had injury troubles during his time at the club. Having a back-up option for the Englishman is not a bad plan.
United may lose starting right-back Diogo Dalot at some point soon. His contract does not have long left, and while some reports have stated he wants to stay, he has also been the subject of interest from some big names.
If he is to depart, then United will want to bring in a competent replacement, and Pavard could certainly be that.
