Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez would be a "good signing" for Bayern Munich, according to club legend Lothar Matthaus. The 28-year-old has been in fine form for the Gunners this season and scored the goal that sent them through to FA Cup final at the expense of Manchester City, but his current contract expires next year. Talks over a new deal are on hold until the summer.
While Sanchez is not desperate to leave north London, he is eager to win trophies and challenge for the Champions League trophy – something he probably will not be able to do at Arsenal. Matthaus, who enjoyed success as a player both at both club and international level, praised the former Barcelona attacker and believes he would excel at the Allianz Arena if he did make the move.
"Sanchez is a great player, he would be a good signing for Bayern," Matthaus told AZ, as quoted by Goal."His biggest pro is that he can play in a central role up front and on the wings."
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger recently said Sanchez will remain at the Emirates Stadium next season, but the former Udinese wunderkind will almost certainly be sold in the summer if he fails to agree a new contract with the Arsenal hierarchy.
Bayern are one of the Arsenal talisman's many suitors, and the Bavarians may see him as a replacement him for ageing superstars Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben or Brazilian winger Douglas Costa, who has drawn the ire of Matthaus.
"Costa is no longer the player he was when he just started at Bayern," Matthaus added. "Plus I do not like it that he has been hinting at a transfer in a number of interviews. That is not good for him, nor for Bayern."
