BCCI Looking To Compensate Domestic Cricketers For Income Loss In 2020-21 Ranji Season Due To Covid
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) working group has recommended to the Apex Council that the domestic cricketers should be compensated for the loss of payment due to the COVID-19 pandemic which wreaked havoc on the domestic cricket calendar leading to the cancelation of the 2020-21 Ranji season.
Currently, a domestic player who is chosen in his state team’s first XI is paid Rs 35,000 per day and a match fee of Rs 1.5 lakh for one game. A team usually plays 8-9 matches per season given the current format of the tournament and this meant that cancelation of the previous season of Ranji Trophy meant a huge loss on income for players who are solely reliant on cricket.
Domestic Cricketers Might Get Minimum 50 Percent Compensation Of Their Total Match Fees
The BCCI working group has recommended that the domestic cricketers should be paid atleast 50 percent compensation of their total match fees. The final decision however will be taken by BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah, who will discuss the topic with the Apex Council members on September 20.
India Today reported that a number of proposals were discussed by the committee comprising former India captain Mohammed Azharuddin, Yudhvir Singh, Santosh Menon, Jaydev Shah, Avishek Dalmiya, Rohan Jaitley, and Devajit Saikia.
“The final decision lies with secretary Jay bhai but what most members agreed was a lump sum compensation of 50 percent of what could have been the total match fees for playing all the league games in a Ranji season. There was some debate whether only those who played at least one game in 2019-20 season will be considered or at least players from last two seasons.
That decision would be taken by the office bearers as the quantum of expenditure is their domain. But as per as the math goes, the committee wants that player to be paid a minimum of 50 percent and it could go up to 70 percent,” the source added.
Furthermore, it has also been reported that the domestic cricketers’ pending match fee increase will be cleared by the president and secretary. Currently, the general consensus is that the new match fee will be anything between Rs 2 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh.
