BCCI Receives Conflict Of Interest Complaint Over MS Dhoni’s Appointment As Mentor Of T20 World Cup 2021 India Team

BCCI pulled off a masterclass move when they announced the Indian squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2021, as they named former India captain MS Dhoni the mentor of the team. This was an extremely brilliant move from the Indian board which would benefit the team greatly.

Dhoni, who retired from international cricket in 2020, has been involved in the Indian Premier League and the decision of appointing him mentor came after discussions between him, BCCI secretary Jay Shah, India captain Virat Kohli, head coach Ravi Shastri and Rohit Sharma.

“I am glad that MS has accepted this offer and he is keen to contribute to our national team once again. MS Dhoni will work closely with Ravi Shastri as well as the other support staff to provide support to Team India.

As far as MS Dhoni is concerned, I spoke to him when I was in Dubai. He agreed to be the mentor of Team India for the T20 World Cup only. I discussed this with my colleagues also, they are also in the same page. I spoke to the captain and Vice-captain as well as Ravi Shastri. That’s why we reached the conclusion,” Jay Shah said.

Sanjeev Gupta Files Conflict Of Interest Complaint Over MS Dhoni’s Appointment As Mentor

However, his appointment has fallen into controversy as former Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association life member Sanjeev Gupta has sent a letter to the apex council members that Dhoni’s appointment is a violation of the Conflict of Interest clause, under which one person cannot hold two posts.

Gupta has previously filed a series of conflict of interest complaints against players and administrators. This complaint comes as MS Dhoni captains Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.

“Yes, Gupta has sent a letter to apex council members including Sourav (Ganguly) and Jay (Shah). He has cited clause 38 (4) of the BCCI constitution which loosely states that one person cannot be holding two separate posts. The Apex Council will need to consult its legal team to check the ramifications,” a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

It is understood that Dhoni being a player in one team and a mentor in another raises questions for which clarity is needed.
