Man Utd legend Peter Schmeichel hopes Cristiano Ronaldo can stay at Old Trafford and urges both parties to “talk this through”.

Ronaldo has been criticised this week for giving a controversial interview to Piers Morgan in which he had a lot of negative things to say about Man Utd and a number of people associated with the club.

The interview has not gone down well at Old Trafford with Ten Hag and some of his Man Utd players said to be ‘furious’ with Ronaldo.

On Ten Hag and Man Utd senior executives trying to force him out the club, Ronaldo said: “I don’t have respect for him because he doesn’t show respect for me.

“Some people, they don’t want me here – not only the coach but the other two or three guys. Not only this year, but last year too. Honestly, I shouldn’t say that. But listen, I don’t care. People should listen to the truth. Yes, I feel betrayed.”

Graeme Souness is one of the only pundits to defend Ronaldo’s actions with most criticising him unprofessional behaviour and some calling for him to be sacked by Man Utd.

And now we are questioning which fairy tales former Man Utd goalkeeper Schmeichel has watched after he called for Ronaldo to stay at Old Trafford.

Schmeichel told BBC Radio 5 Live: “I believe in fairy tales.

“I’m a big big fan of Ronaldo. I’ve always been a big fan of him. And I’m a big fan of Manchester United having the best players in the world.

“I hope there will be an opportunity where his people and Manchester United can sit down, and talk this through, and find a solution.

“I really want Cristiano to stay a Manchester United player.”

But Teddy Sheringham has taken the opposite view from Schmeichel, with the former Man Utd striker insisting it’s “time for him to go now”.

Sheringham told the Daily Mail: “He’s using words like ‘disrespected’ and him disrespecting the manager. When you come out with these things, there are going to be a lot of unhappy Man United supporters this morning reading all this.

“It’s definitely, definitely, time for him to go now. There’s no turning back. He should have gone at the start of the season, he didn’t, they tried to work with it. Obviously his body language hasn’t been great – I think he needs to go now.”
