Bellator Inks Olympic Hopeful Ed Ruth, Penn State's Three-Time National Champ

NCAA Champ Ed Ruth Excitedly Anticipating His MMA Debut

Bellator MMA on Monday announced the signing of one of the hottest prospects out of the collegiate wrestling world, Ed Ruth. The decorated wrestler has signed an exclusive, multi-fight deal with the fight promotion.

The 25-year-old is currently focused on the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, but will make the move to mixed martial arts after he finishes his Olympic bid.

“I’ve known for a long time now that after I get Olympic gold around my neck, I was going to go get some MMA gold for my waist,” said Ruth. “I’ve been talking with all the major organizations, and at the end of the day, I really believe in what Scott Coker is doing with Bellator. They’re signing the top talent, they’re putting on exciting fights, and they’re letting me secure my own sponsors.

“It will be a little while until I step into the cage for the first time — but when I do, everyone they put in front of me is in for a world of hurt.”

Ruth was a three-time national champion and four-time All-American while wrestling for Penn State University.

Joining Ruth on the Bellator roster is blue-chip amateur wrestling prospect Aaron Pico, who is also making a run at the Rio Olympics before shifting his focus to MMA.

When the time comes, Ruth is expected to compete in Bellator’s middleweight division alongside current titleholder Brandon Halsey, Kendall Grove, Rafael Carvalho, Joe Schilling, Alexander Shlemenko, and Melvin Manhoef, amongst others.
