Bellator's Mike Richman Tests Positive for PEDs, Suspended for Two Years

Bellator's Mike Richman Tests Positive for PEDs, Suspended for Two Years

As the combat sports world cracks down on drug use more intensely than ever, two Bellator fighters have been caught for drugs in relation to their Bellator 137 bouts on May 15 in Temecula, Calif.

Mike Richman tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance, according to a statement from Bellator MMA to MMAWeekly.com. An initial report by Sherdog.com identified the PED as the anabolic steroid drostanolone. Fellow Bellator 137 fighter Fernando Gonzalez tested positive for marijuana.

“Andy Foster of the California State Athletic Commission has notified us of two positive tests following Bellator 137, Mike Richman for PED’s and Fernando Gonzalez for Marijuana,” read Bellator's statement to MMAWeekly.com.

“We’ve been informed that these fighters will be subject to suspensions and a fines. We here at Bellator stand behind the commission 100 percent in this process and remain committed to keeping MMA clean of substance abuse.”

A short time after the news broke, Richman posted on Facebook, admitting to using an anabolic steroid.

“In regards to my positive test results for an Anabolic Steroid. I want to say that I lost the integrity in myself and the integrity of this sport,” Richman wrote. “I will not sit here and deny that I took it or act like I didn't know what I was taking or blame it on someone else. I am a cheat, plain and simple and there is no excuse or reason that is valid enough to dispute the reasons why I cheated the sport and myself by using it.”

Foster, the CSAC executive director, told MMAWeekly.com that Richman will be suspended for two years and fined the maximum allowable amount of $2,500. Richman lost to Eduardo Dantas at Bellator 137.

Foster also said that since this is Gonzalez's second rule violation, he will be fined $1,500 plus the cost of the drug test and suspended for 90 days. Although he won his bout with Curtis Millender, the result will not be altered, according to Foster. Gonzalez first tested positive for marijuana after Bellator 127 last October.
