The first Triple Crown race of a year that's upended sporting schedules around the world is the Belmont Stakes on Saturday.
While the Preakness Stakes and Kentucky Derby were pushed back significantly by the coronavirus pandemic, Belmont is still taking place in June as it did last year, when Sir Winston finished ahead of the field.
The COVID-19 outbreak has still taken its toll on the New York competition, though, by limiting the available prize rewards for its winners relative to 2019.
Here's a look at what the winning sides will get Saturday, as well as how the Belmont purse stacks up against its Triple Crown counterparts.
What is the Belmont Stakes purse in 2020?
This year's Belmont Stakes purse is $1 million. That's a steep drop from the $1.5 million purse from 2019.
How much money does the Belmont Stakes winner get?
The winner of the 2020 Belmont Stakes on Saturday will receive $535,000 — equivalent to 53.5 percent of the total prize money up for grabs.
Last year, the winner (Sir Winston) received $800,000.
Prize money breakdown for Belmont Stakes 2020
The $1 million purse for the Belmont Stakes will be broken down among the top-five finishers in the following manner.
Belmont Stakes prize money compared to other Triple Crown races
The Kentucky Derby will take place this September, while the Preakness Stakes will run in October.
The Derby has the highest purse of any Triple Crown race. The 2020 Preakness Stakes purse has yet to be announced but might be lower than last year's in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
