Ben Foster has revealed he thinks Liverpool will not be in the top two of the Premier League this season, following the sale of Sadio Mane.
Liverpool have finished within the top two of the Premier League in three of the last four seasons. The campaign in which they failed to do so, 2020/21, they came third.
Still, under Jurgen Klopp, they have managed to elevate themselves into a position as one of England’s elite once again.
They ended a 30-year wait for a Premier League title in 2019/20, and finished one point behind winners Manchester City last term.
Despite their obvious status as one of the league’s very best sides, former Premier League goalkeeper Foster feels they may struggle this season.
“I think there’s going to be two better teams than Liverpool this year,” he said on Ben Foster – The Cycling GK.
Those sides are Manchester City and Chelsea, according to Foster.
“I can’t see them [Liverpool] trying to be up there and about winning the Premier League – I just can’t. I still think they’ll do decent, third position,” he added.
That is a bold claim given how close they came to winning the league last season. What is even more interesting is that Foster thinks Chelsea, who finished 18 points behind Liverpool last term, will usurp them for one of the top two spots.
However, that sort of prediction is likely to rile up the Reds, and could give them the fire to want to prove people wrong.
Foster feels Mane loss is crucial
There was method to Foster’s prediction, as he clearly thinks the sale of Mane will hinder their progress.
“I think losing Sadio Mane, I think they’re in a little bit of a transition period,” he said.
Indeed, losing a player who contributed to more than 150 goals in 269 games is a big blow. However, Liverpool have also recruited well of late.
They brought in Luis Diaz in January, and he had an immediate impact, contributing to 11 goals in the half a season he has spent at Anfield so far.
They have also made the big signing of Darwin Nunez this summer. The Colombian bagged 32 goals in all competitions last season, and scored four times in his first outing in a Liverpool shirt in pre-season.
As such, they appear to have replaced the quality that has left, and should not see a massive drop off in form despite losing Mane.
