Ben McAdoo resurfaces, former Giants coach lands on Jaguars staff
Very few coaches are as lucky as Adam Gase, to fail at one head coaching job and immediately find another job as head coach.
Most fired coaches have to take a step or two back and work back up the ladder. Ben McAdoo is following that path.
McAdoo, who was fired as New York Giants coach and will always be a sore subject with Giants fans, is back in the NFL after a year off. He will be the Jaguars’ quarterbacks coach, the team announced on Wednesday.
It’s not where McAdoo was a couple years ago, or even right before the Giants promoted him to be head coach, but it’s a start.
Ben McAdoo isn’t popular in New York
McAdoo will forever be known as the coach who ended Eli Manning’s consecutive starts streak. During the 2017 season he benched the struggling Manning to give Geno Smith a start, and forever earned the scorn of Giants fans for it.
After that, McAdoo was toast in New York. Even though he went 11-5 in his first year with the Giants, he was 2-10 when the Giants fired him during the 2017 season. He wasn’t in the NFL last season. But now he’s back.
He’ll join another former head coach, Jay Gruden, who was hired as the Jaguars’ offensive coordinator after being fired by Washington during last season.
"Coach McAdoo brings a lot of experience and knowledge to the quarterback room, and we're excited to add him to our offensive coaching staff," Jaguars coach Doug Marrone said in a statement. "He has mentored several great quarterbacks throughout his career, and his understanding of the position will be a valuable addition to our team and for the development of that group."
McAdoo worked up the ladder before
McAdoo was on a familiar career path before the Giants, head-coaching debacle.
He worked up in the NFL from quality control to tight ends coach to quarterbacks coach with the Packers. He joined the Giants as their offensive coordinator in 2014 and did a good job in that role for two years. That’s why he was tabbed to replace Tom Coughlin — who coincidentally enough was just fired from his post as Jaguars executive vice president of football operations.
So McAdoo is back in a job he hasn’t had since 2013. It’s probably not what he envisioned after that 11-5 season as Giants head coach, but he probably didn’t have much choice.
