Danny Mills has questioned why Brighton defender Ben White would want to join Arsenal at present, stating his surprise that “bigger and better” clubs have not swooped for the England international.

Highly-rated centre-back White is in the midst of something of a whirlwind summer, earning a late call-up to the Three Lions squad that reached the final of Euro 2020 on home soil at Wembley following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s pre-tournament injury heartbreak.

After that unforgettable experience, White, who did not play for England during the tournament, is now set to become the headline signing of Arsenal’s summer recruitment drive following the arrivals of Nuno Tavares and Albert Sambi Lokonga from Benfica and Anderlecht respectively.

Earlier this week, the Gunners finally agreed a deal in principle with Brighton worth £50million after prolonged negotiations between the two clubs that involved an initial £40m bid being rebuffed earlier in the window.

White is set to sign a long-term contract at the Emirates Stadium following a post-European Championship holiday, though former England, Leeds and Manchester City full-back Mills has now questioned why the 23-year-old would want to join Arsenal in the first place.

“I think he’s better than Arsenal right now,” Mills told talkSPORT.

“I just wonder what his ambitions are. I’m surprised bigger and better clubs with more of a chance to win something haven’t come in for him.”

Mills cast doubt upon the likelihood of popular former Leeds loanee White winning major silverware at Arsenal and expressed his shock that the likes of Manchester United had not attempted to negotiate a deal with Brighton also.

The Red Devils, per the latest reports, are closing in on the signing of Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane instead as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer seeks an upgrade to play alongside captain Harry Maguire in the heart of the defence at Old Trafford.

“I think he is better than that at the moment. What is he going to win at Arsenal? The League Cup if he is lucky. Maybe the FA Cup?” Mills said of White.

“It’s going to be a while before Arsenal win a Champions League. Winning the Premier League, you’re looking probably seven or eight years down the line, he might be retiring before that stage.

“I think he is an exceptional player and a fantastic signing for Arsenal, I’m just a little surprised Manchester United, who are looking for a centre-half, haven’t come in for him.”
