The Italian derby between Benetton and Zebre has become the fourth match of the New Year programme in the United Rugby Championship to be postponed because of Covid.
The game, due to take place on January 2, was called off by the organisers after Benetton registered a number of positive tests within the squad.
“The URC Medical Advisory Group has liaised with Benetton and the local health authorities and deemed that the fixture cannot go ahead as scheduled,” read a URC statement.
“The United Rugby Championship will now consider available dates to reschedule the game.”
The postponement adds to the headache for the organisers of finding a free weekend in the calendar to play the postponed games on, with an overlap with the Six Nations looking more and more likely.
The only two games now remaining from the New Year schedule are Connacht v Munster and Scarlets v Ospreys, both to be played on New Year’s Day.
