Manchester City expect to have full back Benjamin Mendy back in action by the end of September after a successful knee operation.

That will mean the France international comes in contention for a place in the team after the first international break, although City will not rush him back.

Mendy has completed the first stage of his rehabilitation in Barcelona and will re-join the team in Manchester at the end of August.

City will still be cautious with his recovery given it was the second serious knee injury the left-back has suffered since arriving from Monaco for £52m in 2018.

Mendy will also have to fight for his place when he is fully fit as Pep Guardiola has activated a £12m buy-back clause to bring another left back, Angelino, back to the club from PSV Eindhoven

Angelino had an excellent season in Holland, making 34 appearances for PSV and chipping in with nine assists. He has also played in eight Champions League games and had attracted interest from scouts across Europe.

City, though, had protected their interests when they allowed the talented young Spaniard to leave to gain more first team experience and he started their first pre-season friendly, the 4-1 victory over West Ham in the Premier League Asia Trophy this week.

“It was always my objective to get back to the club and it worked, so I’m thankful,” he said after a light training session in Shanghai.

“I had the clause in the contract to come back, so it was up to me to have a good season and see what happens and thankfully it happened.

“I think I improved and I’m not the same player I was when I was here before. The last season at PSV was really good and hopefully I can do the same here.

“Playing as many games as you can helps. I played everything there and that was one of the main things you need as a player.”
