Arsenal see Benjamin Sesko as a potential first signing of the summer transfer window and discussions remain ongoing over a move which could take place before the European Championships next week. The Slovenian international would prefer his future decided before the tournament so he can refocus.

So far, there has been interest from Saudi Arabia which has been rejected. RB Leipzig have also made a significant contract offer to keep the 21-year-old at the club whilst Arsenal are rivalled by both Chelsea and Manchester United.

The Gunners are considered frontrunners for the moment and are the only side of those interested in signing a striker who can offer Champions League football. However, they have missed out on targets to both clubs before with United landing Lisandro Martinez in 2022 while the Blues stole what looked like an inevitable January transfer to north London in January of 2023 when Mykhailo Mudryk signed for them.

Despite posting multiple hints of an Arsenal preference, the Ukrainian international made the switch to Chelsea but sadly it has not resulted in success. This is one of a number of reasons why Sesko’s reported preference for Arsenal exists and certainly shouldn’t change.

The Athletic revealed in February earlier this year that Arsenal understood that Mudryk was ‘devastated’ not to have got the move to play under Mikel Arteta. Instead, he watched on as two new teammates Jorginho and Kai Havertz would make the switch and go on to be beaten twice in his three meetings although he did score in the whacky 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge.

A lob of David Raya would take two points from the Gunners, two points which ultimately could have won the Gunners the title when fast-forwarding to May of this year. That said, the Gunners’ alternative Leandro Trossard has been an overwhelming success which stands again as another warning to Sesko.

If you do instead choose Chelsea over Arsenal, know that the Gunners’ record for finding alternatives to make that regret sting even more is well documented. Zinchenko was signed instead of Martinez and the Ukrainian helped the Gunners compete for a title and qualify for the Champions League finishing nine points above Martinez’s United.

Havertz was signed when Mount was also snapped up first by United and it has been night and day between the two’s experiences at their new sides. Arsenal and Arteta have a plan for Sesko despite perhaps not immediately being guaranteed a starting place.

Players improve under Arteta. Bukayo Saka, Havertz, Declan Rice, William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes, Martin Odegaard, Trossard, Gabriel Martinelli, Ben White and more have reached new heights under the Spaniard whereas the managerial chaos in west London offers no stability nor guarantees to Sesko.

The decision should be simple. Don’t make the mistakes of Mudryk and don’t end up devastated.
