There remains just under a fortnight left of the January transfer window and so far Arsenal have neither signed a player nor made much headway on specific targets. Mikel Arteta was asked after the draw with Aston Villa whether this again raised the pressure to sign players.

“Not at the result at the moment,” he said. “You look at the performances, I don’t know how many teams are playing at this level in the league. When you look at the bench, probably you say I think we are very short.”

This will not bring as much hope to supporters as some of his previous commitments to transfers will. The area that of course is of greatest need would be a forward, either in the wide areas but what fans would most desperately call for is a striker.

The main name which has been a predominant focus for fans and reports alike is Benjamin Sesko. From a football.london perspective, we understand that Arsenal’s interest in the player is very genuine and has not faded despite a summer move for the player not advancing far and the Slovenian international instead signing a new deal which removed the old release clause.

RB Leipzig do not want to sell this winter and suggestions of talks about a loan earlier in the window are wide of the mark. That does not mean that this reality may emerge at some stage, but so far suggestions of talks between clubs advancing are frustratingly not the case as of yet.

Despite the reluctance to sell, every player has their price. As is the case in the January transfer window, clubs usually have to pay over the odds for players and Arsenal will be more than aware of this being the case.

What could Sesko cost? Well, the old release clause was in the region of £50million and he has since continued to impress and has scored in his past four successive Bundesliga matches.

Some numbers have been banded around with little to support them. £70million being one of the figures and for hypothetical sake, were this the fee, I would certainly see that as a fine investment.

A player in his very early twenties having moved from the Red Bull Salzburg academy, stepped up to the Bundesliga with Leipzig seamlessly and now ready to take on a new challenge again. The numbers are very promising.

Wage wise it would be significantly less than would be given to a much older Viktor Gyokeres or Victor Osimhen. When looking at Omar Marmoush's move to Manchester City after a similar run of impressive performances for more than £70million it seems a fair price to pay at this stage of the market.
