The transfer saga surrounding German goalkeeper Bernd Leno has finally come to an end, as he has left Arsenal for Fulham in an £8million move.

Leno made just eight appearances last season after falling behind Aaron Ramsdale in the pecking order. Only one Premier League outing came his way from September onwards.

The 30-year-old is eager to play regularly, preferably with a top-flight team. As a result, plenty of clubs have either been monitoring his situation or planning bids.

Newcastle United, Leicester City and PSV Eindhoven are just some of the teams to have been linked with Leno.

Newcastle went on to sign Nick Pope from Burnley instead, while Martin Dubravka could end up going to Leicester.

On Monday, Fulham agreed a transfer with Arsenal for Leno, who has won nine caps with the German national team. And the keeper also sorted out personal terms with the Premier League returnees.

Leno has now completed a medical and signed his new Fulham contract, allowing the Cottagers to announce his arrival. As per Fabrizio Romano, the switch is worth £8m.

A Fulham statement read: ‘The club is delighted to confirm the signing of Bernd Leno from Arsenal for an undisclosed fee.

Arsenal thank Bernd Leno as four-year spell comes to an end

‘The 30-year-old goalkeeper has agreed terms on a three-year deal, with a club option to extend by a further 12 months.’

Arsenal also released a statement, which ended with: ‘We thank you Bernd for your contribution to the club during your four years with us.

‘Everyone at Arsenal wishes Bernd and his family all the very best in their new chapter.’

During his first interview as a Fulham player, Leno told club media: “It feels amazing to finally be here. I can’t wait to join the team, to train and play with the team.

“I’m relieved that everything is done. I’m just happy to be here. It took a little bit of time but in the end we made it, and that’s the most important thing.”

Fulham co-owner Tony Khan added: “Bernd Leno is the goalkeeper whom we have pursued steadfastly throughout this transfer window, and we’re very excited that we’ve reached a transfer agreement and he’s now fully committed to Fulham!

“He has played at the highest level, and he’ll bring this experience and his leadership to our team. He’ll be a great addition to Marco’s squad, who are all excited for the season ahead!”

Leno has filled the gap Marco Silva was looking for. He will begin the new season as Fulham’s number one, ahead of team-mates Marek Rodak and Paulo Gazzaniga.

Leno will have to cut out some of the mistakes from his Arsenal spell if he is to be a success at Craven Cottage and help Fulham stay in the top flight.

Meanwhile, a transfer insider has spoken about whether Bukayo Saka will agree a new deal at the Emirates.
