Drink on: a bottle from Rebellious Goods

(Rebellious Goods)

Dry January didn’t stand a chance. With a third lockdown stretching onwards – and the pubs facing the prospect of closure until May – sorting the home bar has rarely felt so necessary.

While few of us are likely to have a cellar to stock, filling the fridge with the good stuff is a matter of calling on the right people. Supermarkets shelves might, on the whole, be stacked with better wine than they used to be, but they’re still far from the best places to find something really special.

While, in person, wine shops can feel a little intimidating to head into – “What are you looking for?” feeling like a test of character, rather than an offer of help – the necessity of lockdown offers a little time to get to know your local specialist from the safety of your sofa.

Take advantage of the time to get to know what you like; mixed cases often make a great introduction into a variety of styles, but most of London’s top wine-sellers are also an affable lot, ready to answer questions and offer recommendations. Go on, give one a go – and happy drinking.
