Betancur wins Trofeo Melinda

Carlo Betancur (Acqua & Sapone) produced a well timed sprint on the cobblestones to win the Trofeo Melinda in Italy.

The Colombian prospect wrapped his second victory in a week as he added to his stage win at the Tour of Belgium by edging out Moreno Moser(Liquigas-Cannondale) and Giampaolo Caruso (Katusha).

Moser had the home support and was the pre-race favourite but he just couldn't live with Betancur's speed and the 22-year-old winner is now targeting a spot at London 2012.

“Melinda’s route suits me,” Betancur admitted after his victory.

“It is pretty similar to the profiles we find in races in my home country. I had already taken two second places at the Giro del Trentino, now this win comes just days after last Sunday’s success in Belgium.

“I could feel my team’s trust, and today I hope to have moved closer to the Olympics. In the future, I hope to play a part in grand tours.”
