Bianca Andreescu issues update after horror injury at Miami Open
Bianca Andreescu’s injury at the Miami Open was one of the more shocking scenes on a tennis court in recent years and now she has issued an update on her condition.
Andreescu was enjoying a resurgence in form as she plotted a path to the last 16 in Miami after high-profile wins against former Grand Slam champions Emma Raducanu and Sofia Kenin, as well as a fine victory against No 7 seed Maria Sakkari.
Yet her story in Miami turned a harrowing turn as she suffered an ankle injury during her match against slumped to the court during her match against Ekaterina Alexandrova.
“I’ve never felt this kind of pain before,” screamed Andreescu as she lay on the court, before she was taken off for treatment in a wheelchair.
Andreescu received some treatment and was eventually helped to her feet before being given a long hug and encouraging words from Alexandrova.
“I’m just really sorry that it happened,” Alexandrova said after the match.
“Seeing her on the court in so much pain, it’s just painful to watch. You cannot help, you just can do nothing, which is terrible. And I think she’s going to be fine soon, and I’m wishing for her speedy recovery.
“The first set was super tough and great, and it probably could be a pretty good match for both of us, but unfortunately this happened.”
Now Andreescu has given an update on her treatment since the injury, as she admitted she is still waiting to discover the full extent of the damage.
“Woke up with a brace on my foot… anyone know what happened?” she wrote in a message on Twitter.
“On a serious note… that was the worst pain I’ve ever felt… praying for nothing serious. Still waiting on official results.
“Thank you everyone for your thoughts and kind words, doesn’t go unnoticed.”
The Canadian went further to clarify her injury position as she confirmed she has damaged ankle ligaments, but suggested the damage “could have been worse” after discussions with medics.
Andreescu’s injury could not have come at a worse moment, as she appeared to be getting back towards her best after a challenging period since her 2019 US Open win.
She took time away from the game to find her best form and seemed to have discovered a winning formula with some fine displays in Miami.
Now her immediate future will be decided by the medical results from ongoing tests in Miami.
