After the first prone shooting stage a medal of any colour in the 12.5km mass start event looked way beyond Domracheva’s reach as she found herself way off the pace in 26th.
But the 25-year-old didn’t claim Olympic 15km individual bronze in 2010 for nothing and from then on out demonstrated perfection with the rifle and devastating ski speed to claim an unexpected gold.
Silver went to Slovakian Anastasiya Kuzmina, 25.2 seconds back with one penalty, while Germany’s Magdalena Neuner had to settle for bronze.
Domracheva’s victory, her third of the season, moves her to within 57 points of World Cup leader Neuner in the overall standings, while Finland’s Kaisa Makarainen holds on to third despite finishing down in 11th in Italy.
